Miami Hurricanes to get weekend visit from portal DT that was a first team All-Conference selection in 2022

Miami Hurricanes to get weekend visit from portal DT that was a first team All-Conference selection in 2022

Oklahoma veteran CB Jaden Davis, who has 22 career starts, is joining Miami Hurricanes in huge pickup for program

It was less than a week ago that Louisiana Tech grad senior defensive tackle Keivie Rose entered the transfer portal. Given Miami’s top end talent and depth concerns at that position, it’s no surprise that Miami quickly reached out to Rose to gauge his interest.

Others that also are pushing include Missouri, Mississippi, Virginia Tech and Arkansas.

But Miami’s made some headway with Rose: CaneSport has learned he will be on campus for a visit this weekend.

A 6-3, 303-pounder, Rose has started 32 games for the Bulldogs. That began back in 2020 as a redshirt freshman when the former 3-star out of Henderson, Tex. had eight starts (23 tackles, 1.5 TFL). In 2021 he started all 12 games and had 25 tackles, 4 TFL and a sack and earned honorable mention All-Conference, then last year he started every game and was first team All-Conference USA with 24 tackles, 4 TFL and two sacks.

Rose’s Pro Football Focus grades? In 647 reps last year he graded out at a solid 69.7 percent (65.8 run defense, 40.6 tackling with 8 missed tackles and 72.4 percent in pass rush). He was credited with 15 QB hurries. In 2021 he had 14 QB hurries and graded out at 68.1 percent in 467 reps (63.7 run defense, 74.2 tackling, 71.1 pass rush), and in 2020 while playing 363 reps his grade was 53.0 percent overall (48.8 percent run defense, 71.2 percent tackling and 61.9 percent pass rush).

Miami’s already added nine players in the portal this cycle, with the most recent CB Jaden Davis yesterday. And at DT the team still has its eyes on Mississippi transfer Tywone Malone, who visited Ohio State over the weekend. The Canes are looking to get him on campus as well.

Miami added a pair of defensive tackles in the portal prior to spring ball, Purdue’s Branson Deen and Georgia State’s Thomas Gore. Both are undersized, though, whereas Rose has considerable size. The team’s returning tackles are starter Leonard Taylor, who is one of the ACC’s top returners at the position, along with the oft-injured Jared Harrison-Hunte and depth filler Jacob Lichtenstein. A new freshman face that arrives this summer will be Joshua Horton.

So the opportunity is there for a transfer to come in, light it up and start opposite Taylor.
