‘Upset’ by falling to Round 5, former FSU star Jammie Robinson vows to be great with Panthers

‘Upset’ by falling to Round 5, former FSU star Jammie Robinson vows to be great with Panthers

When he took part in a video press conference with the Carolina Panthers media on Saturday, former Florida State safety Jammie Robinson seemed happy to be on his way to Charlotte. But he was not pleased at all by how far he fell in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Robinson, a two-time first-team All-ACC selection, was taken with the 10th pick of the fifth round; No. 145 overall.

“I’ve been real upset since yesterday, I ain’t going to lie to you sir,” Robinson said to a reporter. “I’ve just been upset about this whole thing. But I know this pick is going to be the best pick in the draft. Carolina Panthers, y’all know: I’m fixing to come in, I’m fixing to compete for a spot. … At the end of the day, I know there’s not 144 guys better than me.

“I’m just ready to work.”

Falling to the fifth round when he was projected in many mock drafts to be selected in the third or fourth rounds has only added to the chip on Robinson’s shoulder going into his rookie year.

“Salty’s not the word. I’m hurt …,” Robinson said. “I know I was better than a lot of the guys who got picked. But honestly, I can’t control that. I can’t control what happened. All I can control is the next chapter. And the next chapter is about to be a great route for me and my family, and the fans as well. Because I plan on being in Carolina my whole career.”

Robinson, who started his college career at South Carolina before transferring to Florida State, was very productive in his two seasons with the Seminoles. In 2021, he registered 85 tackles, including seven for loss, and a had a team-high four interceptions. Last year, he racked up 99 tackles and one interception.

When asked which one of his college plays best represents who he is, Robinson brought up a highlight that will bring a smile to many Florida State fans.

“Miami, what I did to the QB, when I just threw him down …,” he said. “I feel like the play from Miami for sure just signifies me. Just showing that I’m a dog. I’m not probably the biggest on the field, but hey, I’m a dog.”

Robinson was also asked about his relationship with former Seminole defensive end Brian Burns. While they never played together at Florida State, Robinson said he has seen a lot of highlights from Burns’ Florida State career.

Burns was a first-round pick for the Panthers back in 2019 and has made the Pro Bowl each of the past two seasons.

The Panthers hope they are getting another impactful former Seminole in Robinson.

“First of all, he’s just a tough competitor,” Carolina head coach Frank Reich said, when asked if Robinson projects as a safety or nickelback at the next level. “I don’t want to put him into a box just yet. We want to get to know him even more once he gets here.

“He’s the kind of guy … high character, tough, edgy. You know, has an edge to him.”

When asked a similar question, Robinson said he is going to go back to how he has always played, whether at South Carolina or Florida State. He’s a football player at any position.

“I’m a team guy,” he said. “I don’t care what position, as long as I’m on the field.”
