Lucky Charms: What’s next on the 2024 Notre Dame wide receiver board?
Here are today’s Lucky Charms, a Monday-Thursday nightly insider notes article on Notre Dame football recruiting.
*** Notre Dame is up to two receiver commitments, as Warner Robins (Ga.) High’s Isiah Canion joined Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South’s Cam Williams on the Irish verbal list earlier today. When Notre Dame offered Canion in early March, there was a sense among the fan base that the staff was reaching for an under the radar prospect and could do better.
Well, Canion has seen his recruiting stock soar since picking up his first offer in mid February from Indiana. Some of the heavy hitters in the SEC have been sniffing around at Canion in recent weeks, and although they haven’t offered yet, it would come as no surprise if they do moving forward, despite his Irish pledge.
Notre Dame sources are raving about Canion and believe he’s a five-star type talent. They feel the same about Williams. As good as Notre Dame’s 2023 receiver class was, the 2024 cycle may end up being even better.
*** Charlotte (N.C.) Christian’s Micah Gilbert, the nation’s No. 223 overall player and No. 38 wide receiver per the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, may be next to join the class. He’s considered a Notre Dame lean heading into his decision date of next Tuesday. The four-star prospect tweeted earlier this week about his commitment date, and he’s fresh off a Notre Dame visit, which is always a good sign.
*** If Notre Dame adds Gilbert and gets to three commitments, the staff will have hit its mark. They wanted three receivers in the class, but as we’ve seen many times over the years, it’s hard for a school to turn down a top talent. With that in mind, I’m told that Notre Dame will still recruit Long Beach (Calif.) Poly’s Jason Robinson Jr., who ranks as the No. 432 overall prospect and No. 78 wide receiver per the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking.
Whether the staff will take a fourth receiver in the class will have many factors, including what the class looks like by the time Robinson would be ready to commit. And the Irish coaches may not even have to make th the choice in the end. As much as sources have been buzzing about Notre Dame’s standing in Robinson’s recruitment in recent weeks (I even logged a prediction April 19 for it to happen), there are other folks connected to the recruitment who believe he ends up at Colorado. I’m rolling with my sources, but my gut tells me that he ends up elsewhere. I understand I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth here, but I’m being transparent.
*** There’s also Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic’s Emmett Mosley, a double Notre Dame legacy who ranks as the No. 288 prospect and No. 48 receiver per the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. But in all honesty, it’s been tough to gather a whole lot on his recruitment. He may be trending toward the Pac-12.
All in all, Notre Dame has two receiver commitments, looks likely to get a third from Gilbert and will be in a really good spot moving forward with the potential of still adding Robinson or Mosley.
