Michigan State coaches on the road: April 24 through April 28

The 2022-23 NCAA Recruiting Calendar began an evaluation period on April 15, continuing through May 31. Michigan State coaches will hit the road stopping across the country to visit the schools and evaluate top recruiting targets. In this article, we will track which targets will receive visits from Michigan State coaches throughout the upcoming week.

Monday, April 24

Michigan State secondary coach Harlon Barnett is expected to be at Phenix City (AL) Central on Monday, home of 2024 defensive back Red Morgan. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound safety was offered by Michigan State in February. His other offers include Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida, and more.

“I still talk to them,” Morgan told SpartanMag.com of Michigan State. “I am thinking about taking an official visit but I don’t know yet.”

There is some familiarity with the staff from previous trips to Phenix City Central.

“(Last year) Michigan State offered a dude named Tomarrion Parker,” Morgan said. “When he visited he told me the atmosphere was crazy. He also loved the coaching staff. I don’t know much yet, but he did tell me a lot.”

Morgan is ranked a three-star, the No. 732 overall recruit, the No. 74 safety, and the No. 33 recruit in Alabama, according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

Spartan offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson will be in Greenwood (IN) Center Grove School on Monday to visit 2024 quarterback Tyler Cherry. Michigan State offered the 6-foot-5, 210-pound quarterback on April 1, while Cherry was on campus for an unofficial visit. His other offers include Indiana, Illinois, Pittsburgh, and more.

Cherry is ranked a three-star, the No. 493 overall recruit, the No. 27 quarterback and the No. 5 recruit in Indiana by the 2024 On3 Industry rankings.

Jay Johnson will also be in Findlay (OH) High School on Tuesday to visit four-star 2025 QB Ryan Montgomery. Montgomery visited Michigan State for spring practice on March 21. He has visited Michigan State “about five times” as a recruit so far.

“I loved how fast and intense they practiced,” Montgomery told SpartanMag.com after the visit. “I really relate well with Coach Johnson’s style as he really gives his QBs all the support they need to run/control the offense.”

Montgomery is ranked a four-star, the No. 162 overall recruit, the No. 11 quarterback, and the No. 5 recruit in Ohio, according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings
