Florida Gators QB commit DJ Lagway working to get 5-star WR Joshisa Trader to Gainesville
It appears 5-star Florida quarterback commit DJ Lagway is taking his role as a Gators recruiter pretty serious — just ask Joshisa Trader.
The Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep 5-star receiver said this weekend Lagway is working hard to get him in the class.
“He’s recruiting me,” Trader told Joseph Hastings of BamaInsider at the Battle 7-on-7 Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. “When I went to the camp, I did the camp with him. He was like, ‘I like how you play. We could do some things at Florida.’”
He has help. Naturally, Florida coach Billy Napier is involved here, too. The same goes for new Gators receivers coach Billy Gonzales; Gonzales apparently is Trader’s primary point of contact among coaches on the Florida staff — and his message to Trader appears to be resonating with him.
“They’re always going to have a good receiving corps,” Trader told Hastings. “Regardless of the fact, they’re always going to have good receivers from everywhere.”
Trader obviously is no ordinary recruit. He’s the No. 22 overall prospect and No. 6 wide receiver in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
He is listed at 6-foot-0.5, 175 pounds.
He had a productive junior season
Last season, he caught 47 passes for 743 yards and seven touchdowns. He had a long reception of 80 yards.
Trader listed a top five in December of Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and Tennessee — and it appears he remains focused on those programs.
He last visited the Gators on March 25. He is expected to return at some point for an official visit, and have a commitment decision by the end of his season.
The No. 1 factor for Trader?
“Relationships,” Trader told On3. “If I don’t have a relationship with the coaches, I’m not going to go there.”
Trader’s On 3 scouting summary
Savvy receiver with signs of a well-rounded skill set as he enters his junior season. Uses his natural shake and change of direction as a route-runner, where he is one of the more technically-advanced receivers early on in the 2024 cycle. Has shown the ability to break off defensive backs with his start-stop ability. A fluid, natural mover in the route and after-catch phases. Shows the ability to track the football downfield. Already has above average size at over 6-foot and 175 pounds. Made big plays against big-time competition in South Florida on a consistent basis.
