No. 1 OT Brandon Baker enjoys a second visit to Nebraska, says Huskers could get an official visit

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive tackle Brandon Baker was back in Nebraska for the spring game on Saturday. The No. 1 offensive tackle in the country was in Lincoln just a month ago for a junior day. This time around, Baker said that he wanted to grow more comfortable at Nebraska and check out their improvement from earlier in the spring.

“I have been able to see the environment once more,” Baker said. “To get comfortable here, really. I really wanted to take a second look at everything. There was a chance to talk to coach Rhule, and I really wanted to see how he’s pushing his players.

“He said that coming to Nebraska, they really wanted to try to become better and try and turn around the program, and things there were a bit hopeless. What he’s been able to accomplish so far at Nebraska means a lot.”

Family of Brandon Baker seeing all of the same things

Baker’s brother was supposed to take the trip to Nebraska for the spring game too, but was unable to make it. Baker says that he and his family are on the same page about Nebraska.

“They are in the same boat as me,” Baker said. “They really like the environment at Nebraska, and they like coach Rhule as a person. He’s straightforward with my parents, and they really appreciate that.”

In March, Baker was able to watch a practice that was full contact. The spring game today was also full contact, but Baker could see the improvement in a month.

“I liked watching their tempo today because I didn’t expect that today. And it wasn’t just the 1’s; it was everyone doing the same exact things. You don’t really see that and the physicality today. There has been a lot of improvement.”

Improvements at Nebraska from one visit to the next

The improvement that Baker sees at Nebraska aligns with the progress he knows about from coach Matt Rhule’s previous college coaching stints at Temple and Baylor.

“Coach Rhule was giving me the rundown. They had a two-win season, and they turned that into a six-win and then a 10-win season at Temple. When he was at Baylor, they had a one-win season, then a seven-win season, and turned that into an 11-win season and went to the Sugar Bowl.”

Baker all but guaranteed that he would take another visit to Nebraska. He has two official visits set at the moment and needs to trim his list next month.

“I would say the chances of me coming back are about 99.9%,” Baker said. “I have scheduled two official visits, one to Ohio State and one to Georgia, as of now. And I need to narrow my list down to a top 10. I think that will be next month. Nebraska could get an official visit, for sure.”

Getting back to Nebraska could be an official visit, but Baker hasn’t set it up and hasn’t committed to it either. He says that he has been planning on making a decision in December and realizes that a lot of things could happen that could change that.

“I would say, for sure, that as far as taking five official visits, that Nebraska is definitely in that mix,” Baker said. “I have said that I would like to decide in December, but things can change.”

A new NCAA rule allows a recruit to take unlimited official visits. Baker says he could take more than five official visits before he is ready to decide.

“No more than six or seven if I go beyond five visits,” Baker said. “It won’t be 10. It may be just one more and take six official visits.”
