Inside The Lines: Getting to know Miami commit Isaiah Thomas

Growing up in Toronto, Canada, Miami Hurricane commit Isaiah Thomas, like many other youngsters his age, tried various sports, but one stuck out above all others: football. From a young age, Thomas’ passion for football was apparent and is something that has stuck with the three-star safety until this day.

“I started playing football around the age of 5,” Thomas told CaneSport. “My parents tried to put me in different sports, like basketball, but they hadn’t ever seen me like any other sport than football, so I stuck with it. When I was 13, I decided I wanted to take this seriously and wanted to try and go Division I and to the NFL as well. From there on, it was just me and my dad, just working and finding the right people to train, and now we are.”

When moving over 2,000 miles away from home at the age of 16, some may think being without your family or being homesick would be the biggest concern or adjustment, but for Thomas it was Florida’s unpredictable weather that threw him off the most upon his arrival.

“If I’m being honest, I would say the humidity here is crazy,” Thomas said. “The most annoying thing when I first got down here was that it would pour rain for an hour or two, then all of a sudden it’s hot, sunny, and humid. That was probably one of the most annoying things, but you get used to it. It’s really different from being somewhere where, in the summer, it’s hot but the majority of the time it’s cold.”

Having the opportunity to represent his home nation of Canada in the United States and at Miami is something Thomas looks forward to every time he takes the field.

With Canada not being known for generating great talent in football, Thomas feels he and his fellow Canadian football players can alter the narrative.

“There are a lot of good players to come out of Canada,” Thomas said. “Like John Metchie (Houston Texans) and different commits over the past years. We’re really starting to put Canada on the map and show that there are a few of us that can come down here and ball and show that we’re serious about the sport and serious about what we do.”

In this latest installment of Inside The Lines, we got one-on-one with Thomas as we discuss his upbringing in Toronto, his recent move to Florida, why he chose the Miami Hurricanes and much more:
