Updated odds released for key Nebraska games exiting spring ball
As Nebraska gets ready to showcase the start of the Matt Rhule era, betting lines are already being updated for some key games. Two of them came out this week.
The Cornhuskers are 8-point underdogs against Minnesota in the season opener Aug. 31, according to FanDuel. In the Sept. 9 matchup against Colorado, Nebraska is a 7.5-point favorite.
It’s quite a way to start Rhule’s first season at the helm, which unofficially gets underway with Saturday’s spring game. There are plenty of festivities planned, as well. Legendary Nebraska player and coach Frank Solich is making his return to Lincoln to be honored, and the Cornhuskers are preparing to unveil the new-look Herbie Husker mascot, as well.
Of course, fans will also get their initial look at the revamped Huskers under Rhule’s leadership during Saturday’s Red and White scrimmage, which kicks off at 1 p.m. CT. Through his first spring, though, Rhule said Nebraska is farther along than he thought it might be — although it isn’t all perfect. The Cornhuskers are still struggling with turnovers on offense, and Rhule pointed that out during his press conference this week.
That said, there’s still time to clean things up.
“I think we’re further ahead than I thought we would be,” Rhule said. “Definitely further ahead … Everyone understands, like, if everything’s important, nothing is important, right? So you make an emphasis early on on ball security and on taking the ball away and everyone’s doing it at a high level. As coaches, you watch the tape and this guy’s taking this wrong step, so you keep correcting all these little things and you can sometimes forget the big things.
“So the things that we say really matter, we won’t win at the level we want to win if you turn the ball over and we will win if we don’t turn the ball over. (It’s) vice versa on defense. For this to be scrimmage two, disappointed again (when) the offense (fumbles) the ball. Interceptions are part of the game but fumbles you know, fumbles are controllable. A lot of people don’t have their quarterbacks live in scrimmages, so the quarterback doesn’t turn the ball over, doesn’t get hit and fumble. So at least we’re getting that work done now, but just I won’t say it’s a major thing. Just one of my observations coming out (of this scrimmage).”
