Steve Sarkisian shares details from offseason meeting with Quinn Ewers
At the end of every season, head coach Steve Sarkisian sits down to do exit interviews with his players. Everybody on the roster gets to meet with the head coach, discussing where they can improve heading into spring ball. Not just football topics are discussed, as Sarkisian said results in the classroom and weight room may need to improve at times.
Quinn Ewers may have been the most important meeting Sarkisian held last season. There were struggles during his first season at Texas despite small glimpses of brilliance. If there was going to be any kind of improvement heading into 2023, changes were going to need to be made.
“When it was Quinn,” Sarkisian began on Ewers’ meeting. “We had the meeting, we had the dialogue and everybody got on the same page. ‘Okay, what is the next steps going to look like for you?’ I think he dove right into it. It started in January. I think he really devoted himself to the weight room. Obviously, his diet, his nutrition. His overall understanding of the offense.”
Now, results are beginning to show in Austin. The fans got their first glimpse of the new look Ewers on Saturday during the Texas spring game. He completed 16 of 23 passes, going for 195 yards and a touchdown. And that’s without having any kind of plan available.
“I think it shows,” Sarkisian said. “He looked very comfortable today. That’s not having a real game plan going into the game. You’re kind of just running plays in a spring game.”
Spring games should never be the measuring stick, though. Plenty of times have players ‘broken out’ in early April before not translating well when the fall comes around.
Sarkisian has confidence Ewers’ progress will render beginning on Sept. 2. Everyone involved with the Texas program has bought into the starting quarterback following the improvements made in the offseason.
“I think he’s going to be even more dialed in when we gameplan in what we’re trying to attack to get after people,” Sarkisian said. “I think he’s going to be a more confident player and one that I think will instil belief in his teammates and coaches and our entire organization that ‘hey, that’s our guy and he’s going to make the plays when his number is called.’”
There might have been an outside thought of a Texas quarterback competition but Sarkisian knows who his guy is. Ewers is going to have the keys to the offense this season with a ton of different weapons at his disposal. If the results are positive ones, everything will tie back to a December/January exit interview.
