Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke receiving transfer portal opportunities

Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke receiving transfer portal opportunities

With spring practices coming to a close and the reopening of the NIL transfer window, collectives around the country have begun trying to poach players from other teams that might make a difference for their schools in the 2023 season. CaneSport has confirmed that collectives representing multiple schools have approached Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke via his agents at Rosenhaus Sports and made sizeable offers to Van Dyke.

One of those schools is believed to be Alabama. The Tide still has a QB battle taking place right now with Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, who have combined for one career start. Milroe was the backup to Bryce Young and started against Texas A&M. He’s one of the best athletes on the Alabama team. He had a 77-yard touchdown run that helped Bama beat Arkansas after Young was lost to a shoulder injury. A week later, with Young still sidelined, Milroe threw touchdown passes of 10, 29 and 35 yards to three different receivers in a 24-20 home win over the Aggies. Simpson’s freshman experience amounted to 30 snaps and five pass attempts.

Notre Dame was once a school believed to be after Van Dyke but offensive coordinator Tommy Rees left for Alabama. Rees was the one believed to have had an affinity for Van Dyke, which would explain likely Bama interest now.

A starter is not believed to be close to being determined at Bama, which would explain why Nick Saban is whale hunting.

Van Dyke looked sharp in Miami’s Spring Game April 14, proving he is recovered from his shoulder injury of last season.

Now the question is whether that will be his final appearance wearing a Canes uniform as Van Dyke, the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 before an injury-marred 2022 season, weighs whether to enter the portal.

Sources have told CaneSport for many months that the Van Dyke camp has been frustrated that it has not been able to land a massive NIL haul at Miami, where the effort has been more spread out as opposed to centered on one player.

Van Dyke had a deal with John Ruiz’ LifeWallet last season.

A quick refresher on Van Dyke: He was a backup behind D’Eriq King as a true freshman in 2020 (playing off bench in 2 games), then in 2021 was again expected to be behind King. But he was thrust into a starting role after King’s season-ending injury and wound up starring as a starter in the final 9 games of the season. He earned ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after completing 62.3 precent of his passes for 2,931 yards with 25 TD passes and just six INTs.

Then last year Van Dyke was slow out of the gate in Gattis’ new Miami offense. In the first four games, including a trio of perceived overmatched opponents Bethune-Cookman, Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee, he totaled just four TD passes with three interceptions. Then he came alive vs. UNC (496 passing  yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT) and Virginia Tech (342 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) before suffering what was essentially a season-ending injury in the first half vs. Duke.

He ended with 1,835 passing yards, 10 TDs and five INTs. Not the year he had hoped given the high expectations off his outstanding 2021 performance.

Now the question is if he’ll have a big rebound season … and if it will be at Miami.

CaneSport will continue to have more on this developing story.
