2024 3-Star WR Jabari Murphy Breaks Down Top 5, Targeting August Decision
Jabari Murphy is down to five schools and has a date in mind for a decision.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound three-star wide receiver from Elmore (AL) County High told KSR+ that he is looking to commit on his sister’s birthday, August 20.
“I was really motivated to drop this top five list because I knew I didn’t want it to be too late for me to make this decision,” Murphy said. “I just had the courage and the confidence to make this decision before my upcoming football season. Before my next season, I want to commit.”
Murphy is down to a final five of Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, West Virginia, and Penn State. He broke down his thoughts on Kentucky.
“I went up there,” he said. “It was a very beautiful campus and I just loved it. I loved it there.
“Every single school I just named really produces well with wide receivers,” Murphy said. “They have a lot of wide receivers in the NFL. I just knew that these five teams would be a good fit for me.”
Since breaking down his thoughts on Kentucky in an interview with KSR+ on April 3, Murphy has taken a visit to UK.
“They treated me like family and I got to meet some of the players,” Murphy said. “I could see myself fitting in with them very well. The coaching staff all treated me as if I was already on the team. The fan base is just crazy. They go insane. When I dropped my top five, I saw a majority of Kentucky fans than any other school. I really do like it up there.”
Murphy, who is in contact with Kentucky offensive line coach Zach Yenser, said he is in contact with UK almost every day.
“He texts me all the time in the morning, saying, ‘Good morning. How are you doing?’ We’ll just text throughout the day talking about random stuff,” Murphy said. “The relationship with him is very good. I’m pretty sure he’s going to continue recruiting me now that they’re in my top five. There’s a potential chance that I could go there and play for them.”
As far as his fit, Murphy is intrigued by Kentucky’s talent on the offensive side of the ball.
“They’ve got quarterbacks that can throw the ball,” he said. “They’ve got good wide receivers. Even though they’ve got good wide receivers, I could fit in very well with that. They have a good wide receiver coach and I know him personally as well. I feel like it would be very good if I went over there.”
His Wider Recruitment
Jabari Murphy broke down his other four options – Mississippi State, Ole Miss, West Virginia, and Penn State:
Mississippi State: “It just seemed like once I got there for their spring practice, they just treated me like family almost as if it’s a home for me.
Ole Miss: “It was the same.”
West Virginia: “Me and Bilal Marshall have been communicating back and forth, facetiming and calling. I knew, with me and him growing a good bond right there, they would make it.”
Penn State: “The coaching staff has been talking a good bit.”
Next, Murphy is looking to take official visits in the summer and plans on visiting all of his top five schools.
“I haven’t really set a date yet for any one of the schools,” he said. “I’m still in the middle of making that process happen. It’ll go from there.”
With a targeted decision of August 20, Murphy is paying close attention to the relationships between players and coaches to determine his next move.
“Right now, it’s a very hard decision. I’m cutting the time down to August 20, but in between that time right there, I’ll be able to make a decision,” he said. “Right now, the decision is tough because in my head I don’t know where I want to go just yet. That still has to come through building stronger bonds with the coaching staff and just getting into the mix with it.”
Jabari Murphy’s Game
Three-star wide receiver Jabari Murphy of Elmore County High (AL) is the nation’s No. 817 overall prospect, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3 ranks Murphy as the No. 131 wide receiver and the No. 36 player from the state of Alabama.
He describes his game as “physical, aggressive, and outgoing.”
“If I know that we’re in a close game and we have to throw up a 50-50 ball, I’m going to be the one to go grab that ball and score the game-winning touchdown,” Murphy said. “I really call myself a playmaker, but I’m also a ball player at the same time. Whenever I’m in my zone, it’s really hard to stop me.”
Before closing out, Murphy left the Kentucky fans with a message.
“The last time I told them I was going to be dropping a top five soon. I told them to be aware and hear if they’re going to make it,” he said. “They made it, so eventually, I’ll be making my decision on August 20 and as long as they keep doing their thing, I’m going to be doing mine. We’ll see right there.”
