QB commit Luke Kromenhoek shuts down recruitment, predicts big weekend for Seminoles

While there hasn’t been a lot of concern regarding his status as a Florida State commitment, there were some raised eyebrows last weekend when Luke Kromenhoek visited Penn State. With the biggest concern being how effective he could be when talking to recruits in Tallahassee for the Seminoles’ spring showcase on Saturday.

So on Friday, Kromenhoek ended the drama. He and his parents had a meeting with head coach Mike Norvell, and soon after he announced that he was shutting down his recruitment.

He is locked in with the ‘Noles.

“The meeting was just a talk about everything,” Kromenhoek said. “My parents were there, and my mom wanted to know some ‘mom things.’ Like make sure the education was taken serious here. … That was big for her. Then how they hold their athletes accountable in school, and Coach Norvell talked on that. Then talked how everybody felt, and in the end it was a really great meeting. All the questions were answered, and I’ve always felt like this place was my home, and it felt like it was time to close everything down. I’m happy to call it home.

“Walking in today, I knew we were going to have the meeting and pretty much knew I was going to close it down after the meeting. Every time we have a meeting with Coach Norvell, it goes amazing. Always has an answer for everything, and it really hits home. The way he talks with you, who would not want to play for this guy? He nailed it.”

Even though Kromenhoek had let the Seminoles’ coaching staff know that he and his family were going to see Penn State, the visit became a topic of conversation on social media and message boards.

“This past week, a lot of things were being said and put out there, so we talked with the coaches and they wanted to get us here and have a meeting,” the four-star quarterback said. “That is how that happened.”

One of the big topics they discussed was how it might be difficult for Kromenhoek to help Florida State recruit other players if there’s a perception that he’s not firm in his commitment.

“That was a big part because if the quarterback is not all in, and the guy recruiting isn’t all in, why should you be, right?’” he said. “I’m all in now, so I’m going to be that guy. I can’t expect these guys to be all in if I’m not. I felt this was a big step. I do feel it’s going to help the recruiting game some. I’m excited to call this place home and recruit other great players here. But also perfecting my craft as a player.”

While some Florida State fans were bothered by his Penn State trip, the Savannah, Ga., product said he also felt support from a great many Seminoles.

“I felt like ‘Nole Nation handled it pretty well,” Kromenhoek said. “I’ve heard stories of people getting crazy hate messages, but really what stood out to me is ‘Nole Nation hit me with love. And they were like, ‘We love you here, man. You are our QB 1.’ So that hit home with me. I thought that was really cool.”

Another treat for the quarterback commit was seeing his good friend and the other big recruiter for this class — four-star running back Kam Davis — who also arrived in town on Friday.

“Awesome. I love Kam and his entire family,” Kromenhoek said. “They are amazing people, down to earth. Me and him are super similar as we both want the same thing in going to a school and win, compete and do it the right way. He’s a competitor, and I’m a competitor.

“We have the same mindset that we have to build this recruiting class up, so I’m really looking forward to working with him. I can’t wait to have that dude behind me handing the ball to him.”

The quarterback also was fired up to see that the Seminoles landed a commitment from four-star WR Lawayne McCoy on Thursday.

“I was talking to him. He’s a great dude,” Kromenhoek said. “He’s a freak athlete and a great weapon that we can add. He’s a great person. Super excited to have him on my side. I don’t think anyone would want to face that dude. He’s an animal.”

Now that everything is done with his own recruitment, Kromenhoek turns his attention to seeing a fun Florida State spring showcase. He also plans to do some heavy recruiting, and he hinted that this could be a good recruiting weekend for the Seminoles.

“I’m going to try and get them to commit,” Kromenhoek said of his recruiting approach. “I would not say sell them [on FSU], because everything they are hearing about here is true. Showing that we have something special building here, and hop on the train before the train passes. What’s not to love about this place? Let’s make this the No. 1 class.

“I have a good feeling about this weekend. There’s a couple. I don’t want to spoil everything for them, so I won’t name names. I do feel we will get a couple of guys this weekend, which would be huge. Great dudes. Can’t wait for it to be announced. Then there are also some other guys I’m going to work on that I’ve built a great relationship with. Just continue to work on them.”
