Jordan Whittington shares feelings on Chris Jackson as a coach

There are a lot of new faces on the Texas Longhorns this offseason. The Longhorns picked up a handful of players in the transfer portal, including a pair of defensive backs, safety Jalen Catalon and corner Gavin Holmes. And they also made a change in their offensive coaching staff. The Longhorns hired former NFL wide receiver, Chris Jackson. Current Texas receiver Jordan Whittington recently took some time to share feelings on Jackson as a coach.

“He brings maturity. He’s a NFL guy, so you know you’re learning a lot of NFL techniques and stuff like that. We watch film of NFL guys; Christian Kirk is one of my favorite guys to watch. And he’s just translating those things to the college level,” said Whittington.

“You just see how much it does translate. Just being in college and then watching film like that; they do the same stuff. So, you know, just mastering that technique. And him just being a fun guy. He’s a cool guy, funny guy, and we always have debates before we start meeting about the best artists, best coast, best everything.”

Whittington is looking to build off of his best season in burnt orange and white. In 2022 the Cuero, TX, native had career highs in receptions (50) and yards (652). With Jackson’s experience at the next level, Whittington, with the help of his next receivers’ coach, could be just as lethal as Kirk is on the field for the Longhorns in 2023.

Whittington says Texas defensive newcomers are ‘taking strides’

Wittington also gave his thoughts on the two defensive newcomers and how they have been taking strides in practice. And so far, he loves what he’s seen from both but has grown a fondness for Holmes.

“I really like Gavin Holmes,” said Whittington. “I think all of them, man, they came in, and they completely bought into the culture right when they got here. And they’re taking strides, and they are improving really fast. It’s gonna be fun. I can’t hype them up too much because I go against them.”

Holmes came to Texas from Wake Forest where he was a key fixture in the Demon Deacon secondary during his time there. Over the last three seasons, he has had a handful of starts while appearing in 28 games. In 2020 he nearly saw the field but did have an interception with a 32-yard return. Between the ’21 and ’22 seasons, Holmes would start in 13 games recording 43 total tackles, 34 solo and, two forced fumbles.

Whittington has enjoyed what he’s seen from his new teammates thus far. But time will tell if they can keep up with opposing offenses the same as they’ve done in spring. We’ll get a chance to see what they can do soon in Texas’ spring game Sat. April 15 from their home of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
