Georgia’s biggest spring risers on offense

Georgia’s biggest spring risers on offense

Georgia will hold its 13th practice of the spring on Tuesday. There will be no media viewing or interviews afterward but that’s not a problem. We’ll all soon get a look at the team with G-Day set for Saturday.

With that in mind, we’re looking back at what we’ve seen and heard thus far and we’re identifying the guys we feel made the biggest jumps.

TE Lawson Luckie: This one is a no-brainer. Luckie went from a guy we thought might get some fourth-team reps at tight end to a guy who has spent some time with the ones. We’re not saying that he’s ahead of Brock Bowers or Oscar Delp right now. That would be silly, but we are saying that he appears to be carving out a role for himself.

Luckie is in the Bowers mold in that he’s not this ultra long tight end who is going to eventually carry 250 pounds or more. He’s quick, physical, and has the speed to turn short and intermediate catches into long gains. He proved that in the team’s first spring scrimmage with three touchdowns. Georgia got a good one.

RB Branson Robinson: The Bulldogs have battled injuries at tailback this spring and Robinson has stepped up. The hulking sophomore has had a pair of nice scrimmages with the second being the best. Sources tell DawgsHQ that the Mississippi native looks the part of a lead running back. He’s catching the ball better and he’s playing faster.

Georgia’s opponents may not know it yet, but this is a bad sign. Robinson is a big, physical back who is going to wear on teams once he gets lathered up. We probably won’t get to see a ton of him at G-Day seeing as how it’s usually an air show, but he has had a great spring.

OL Austin Blaske and Earnest Greene: We’re putting both in this slot because they both deserve it and for different reasons. Blaske was supposed to be the starting center this year because Sedrick Van Pran was supposed to move on to the NFL. When the latter didn’t happen it was great for Georgia but Blaske had to regroup. Since then he has locked in and put himself in position to play left tackle. This spring has been a fruitful one from the South Georgia native.

Then you have Greene, a guy who had a great spring last year. Back surgery kept him out last season but he has done some good things this spring. He has had to practice his way into shape and probably isn’t quite where he needs to be in that regard. Still, he has drawn praise for his physicality and toughness. He, too, is in position to play in 2023.

OL Micah Morris: We put those two linemen together because they play the same position. Morris gets his on blurb because he has been really good at guard. He’s getting some work at tackle and getting better, helping create depth, but the Camden County High School product has been really good at times on the interior. It’s to the point where he’s probably going to find himself in a rotation as well.

WR Arian Smith: Find a piece of wood and knock on it because Smith is healthy. It’s the longest stretch of his career thus far and he has used it well. Sources tell DawgsHQ that the speedster has rounded out his game and is looking the part of a more natural receiver. It’s amazing how much better a player can get when he’s healthy and getting practice reps.
