DJ Campbell, Cameron Williams standing out on Texas’ offensive line
Texas Longhorns tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders is heading into year number three in the program. During this offseason, Sanders is taking on more of a leadership role during spring practices. And recently, at the Longhorns football media availability, he was tasked with highlighting which offensive line players are ready to take the next step in their development.
“DJ Campbell and Cameron Williams,” said Sanders. “They got a year under their belt, so this is their time to shine. And they’re starting to play their size. I know how it is; being a freshman, you got the jitters and stuff. But they definitely started to play their size. I just can’t wait for them to dominate.
The Longhorns’ offensive line did a commendable job blocking in their pass and run games. Texas rushed for 2,446 yards on the year, led by potential first round pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft, Bijan Robinson, who had 1,580. Pass blocking-wise, the Longhorns’ o-line gave quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card plenty of time to be effective in the pocket. The duo combined for 3,105 yards and were sacked 19 times. For both Williams and Campbell, if they can fully dominate in their roles next season, fans can expect the Texas offense to be even more lethal in 2023.
Jordan Whittington says Texas defensive newcomers are ‘taking strides
The Longhorns have also been looking good on defense in the spring as well. Texas went searching in the NCAA transfer portal for talent to add to their roster, and, boy, did they. To bolster the Longhorn secondary, they added a pair of former highly recruited four-star picks in safety Jalen Catalon and corner Gavin Holmes.
So far, during Texas spring practices, the duo appears to be winning over their new teammates, most notably offensive standout at wide receiver Jordan Whittington. During the Longhorns’ recent media availability, the soon-to-be senior wide out gave his thoughts on the two newcomers and how they have been taking strides in practice.
“I really like Gavin Holmes,” said Whittington. “I think all of them, man, they came in, and they completely bought into the culture right when they got here. And they’re taking strides, and they are improving really fast. It’s gonna be fun. I can’t type them up too much because I go against them.”
Wittington has enjoyed what he’s seen from his new teammates thus far. But time will tell if they can keep up with opposing offenses the same as they’ve done in spring. We’ll get a chance to see what they can do soon in Texas’ spring game Sat. April 15 from their home of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
