Texas veterans discuss what they’ve seen from transfer additions during spring drills

Of the four additions to the Texas roster made during the first transfer window, three are already on campus. Defensive backs Gavin Holmes and Jalen Catalon, plus wide receiver AD Mitchell, joined the Longhorn football program during the winter and are currently participating in spring drills.

Players who hit the portal looking for a new destination don’t do so to sit, and players already on the roster are cognizant of that fact. Returning Longhorns are also aware that additions are made to increase the competition level, and according to a handful of UT players available on Thursday, that’s been the result of the three additions in Austin for the spring.

“It just brings depth to our roster,” Jerrin Thompson said Thursday. “The best man out there is going to play. It just brings the competition level up and makes everybody work harder for a spot.”

Thompson, Jahdae Barron, and Jordan Whittington spoke on Thursday about what they’ve seen from Holmes, Catalon, and Mitchell.

On Gavin Holmes

Jerrin Thompson: “He made a good play today reading the lane and the quarterback. Him, he’s just one of the guys that came with a lot of experience. He understands what his technique is and is just doing his job.”

Jahdae Barron: “Speed and athleticism. He high-points the ball every time the ball is in the ball in the air. He caught a pick the other in red zone.”

On Jalen Catalon

Jerrin Thompson: “When Catalon came in, we had conversations. Generally, I learned a lot from him just technique wise. He taught me some stuff. Catalon, I already knew just from him coming in and having a simple conversation with him that he knows a lot already.”

Jahdae Barron: “We needed some more depth and we needed some speed at corner. With Gavin coming it’s going to help us, and Catalon in the back.”

Note: Catalon has been limited this spring.

On AD Mitchell

Jerrin Thompson: “He’s one of those guys who came in with a lot of experience.”

Jordan Whittington: “AD Mitchell is really nice. My whole room, man, we took a really big step up and I’m really excited to watch what we do.”

Jordan Whittington: “He’s a guy who has played a lot of college football at a high level, so it wasn’t that hard for him to get the offense down. Once he got here, he hit the ground running. He’s a fluid receiver and has got great hands. He’s also a guy that’s a leader. That’s surprising. When somebody gets here, you don’t expect that out of somebody. When he got here, he was talking. He was communicating. He was helping the freshmen out.”
