Jimmy Lindsey has LSU in the mix for a Top 10 EDGE rusher
LSU defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey had to step away from day-to-day coaching duties in August to address a personal health matter.
On the field, the Tigers have shifted around responsibilities in Lindsey’s absence.
One-time JACK linebackers coach John Jancek is coaching the defensive linemen and head coach Brian Kelly brought in a former LSU coach and well-known defensive line guru Pete Jenkins a week ago to help in a consulting role.
In recruiting, it’s always an “all hands on deck” approach with most prospects on the board, and that’s included Linsey working the phone lines as he recruits for both the present and future.
On Tuesday, Lindsey dialed up one of the nation’s Top 10 EDGE rusher and offered him a verbal scholarship.
LSU makes the move on Burgess
Christopher Burgess is already 6-foot-4, 230 pounds as a high school junior, and offers have rolled in from the Who’s Who of college football teams from coast-to-coast.
In the meantime, LSU defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey continued to reach out to Burgess with phone calls and text messages. After a few months, the two grew close, and on Tuesday, the offer from the Tigers arrived.
“Coach Lindesy (called and) offered me,” Burgess told The Bengal Tiger staff. “We have been in communication since he got hired. He didn’t want to offer right away, because I was getting so many offers at the time.
“We talk all the time, and he felt this was the right time. It felt good. Coach Lindsey has always kept it (real with me), so I know he really wants me down there.”
Burgess is ready to dig deeper into the Tigers
While his offer list is among the most impressive among defensive linemen in the 2025 class, Burgess is keeping an open mind as he continues to build relationships with coaching staffs around the country.
The Chicago four-star prospect is already close with Lindsey, and thanks to LSU head coach Brian Kelly’s 30-plus years as a college head coach, the Burgess family already has connections to Kelly beyond his time spent at Notre Dame.
“My dad got recruited by Brian Kelly when he was at Grand Valley State, so he tells me a little bit about him,” Burgess said.
With an LSU offer now in hand, Burgess said he will be visiting Baton Rouge “one day soon”.
“It’s a great feeling to know I have an offer from a prestigious school like LSU,” he said. “I’ve been following them for a minute and just watched them last weekend beat Missouri, who I’m also getting recruited by heavily.”
Teams lining up to get Burgess on campus
Though he’s only a junior, Burgess has seen his recruitment skyrocket as he checks in as the No. 114 overall prospect in the country on the On3 Industry Rankings.
Notre Dame holds the early On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) lead, but Burgess told On3 others schools have been heavily involved, which includes a trio of Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State that have been turning up the heat.
“I feel great about those three schools,” Burgess told On3 in late-September. “Those three schools stand out compared to everybody else. I feel pretty good about those schools. I talk to the coaches. They like me a lot. Relationships are a big factor for me.”
Fast forward to early-October, and with an offer in from LSU, Burgess said he’s now looking to build even further on his knowledge of the Tigers and rapport with the coaches and staff.
“I’m looking to do the same, looking to build relationships,” he said.
