Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 5 action
The fifth week of the 2023 NFL season is now in the books, and Alabama was again well represented with several former Crimson Tide standouts contributing across the league.
Five former Alabama standouts accounted for touchdowns in Week 5 – quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Eagles), Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins) and Bryce Young (Panthers), running back Josh Jacobs (Raiders) and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins). All three quarterbacks were responsible for multiple scores each, while Young’s three touchdown passes were career-highs. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa’s 1,614 yards in his first five games is a new franchise record.
Defensively, three Alabama alums finished with double-digit tackles – linebackers C.J. Mosley (Jets) and Henry To’oTo’o (Texans) and safety Kareem Jackson (Broncos). Another defensive back for Denver, Pat Surtain II, recorded an interception. Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (Commanders) recorded a sack on Thursday night, which moved him into sole possession of the Washington franchise record for sacks by a defensive tackle (36.5).
Four former Crimson Tide stars made their season debuts in Week 5, including rookie offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Eagles), who played in his first NFL regular-season game. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Ravens) was back in Baltimore’s starting lineup after missing the first four games due to a foot injury. Both Cam Robinson (Jaguars) and Jameson Williams (Lions) were active and returned to game action after serving 4-game suspensions.
Entering Week 5, nine teams do not currently have an Alabama player on their 53-man rosters – the 49ers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Cowboys, Packers, Rams, Saints and Vikings. NFL teams on byes this week were the Browns, Buccaneers, Chargers and Seahawks.
