Ole Miss still pursuing Nebraska running back commit Kewan Lacy

Ole Miss still pursuing Nebraska running back commit Kewan Lacy

Lancaster (Tex.) running back Kewan Lacy committed to Nebraska earlier this summer despite overtures from several Power 5 programs. The four-star prospect got back to Oxford, Miss., in July and checked out Lane Kiffin‘s program extensively. But he has remained committed to Matt Rhule’s program despite the Cornhuskers’ putrid 3-3 start.

On Monday, Kiffin and Ole Miss took advantage of the bye week and traveled west to the Lone Star State to check in on Lacy. In 11 games as a junior, he ran for 1,352 yards and 13 touchdowns. Lacy averaged 10 yards per carry and had six 100+ yard games for Lancaster High School. As a sophomore at Nolan Catholic (Tex.), he ran for close to 1,400 yards before transferring to Lancaster.

In 2023, Lacy has been virtually unstoppable until an injury sidelined him. On3 recently moved him up in the On300, ranking him as the No. 165 overall prospect in the country and No. 13 running back in the nation. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average which utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he ranks as the No. 349 overall prospect and No. 28 running back nationally.

“It’s been fun. My senior year is going good,” Lacy told On3’s Billy Embody. “Just got to get healthy and try to go all the way.”

Kewan Lacy still has a great connection to the Ole Miss staff despite only visiting twice.

“I have strong relationships with the running back coaches and a few others,” Lacy said. “It’s like family here. I’m going to do what’s best for me. Ole Miss is still one of my top schools. I’m looking to see how it is and for my family to experience it.”

Ole Miss hired back Kevin Smith as its running backs coach. Lacy is well-aware and has great respect for Smith and the work he’s done over the years.

“Coach (Kevin) Smith came from Miami to go over there so I’m just now getting to know all of the other coaches at Ole Miss,” Lacy said. “I like how they use their running backs. They talk about starting them young to which I like that.”

Ole Miss isn’t the only SEC program working to flip Kewan Lacy.

Both Alabama and Florida coaches were recently in Lancaster, Tex., to see him play in person in recent weeks. The Gators offered last week and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke is now set to push for the running back.

“It was cool. I talked to the coaches. He’s pretty nice,” Lacy said of Juluke. “Hoping to build a relationship with him still.”

Crimson Tide running backs coach Robert Gillespie has also been in contact with Lacy. The two have started to build a line of communication.

“It’s pretty good. We’re building it up, but it’s pretty good,” he said. “Nothing like Alabama.”

Sources say Kewan Lacy is Ole Miss’ “guy” at the running back position.

I’d personally go as far to say he is the top remaining target on the 2024 board outside of Alabama tight end commit Caleb Odom. The comparisons to sophomore running back Quinshon Judkins have been floated. The senior back from Texas seems to like them.

“I can see some similarities,” Lacy said. “We’re both dogs on the field.”
