Three bold predictions for Michigan’s trip to Minnesota

The Michigan Wolverines are 5-0 on the season and looking to make it six in a row with a trip to the Twin Cities to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Here are three quick predictions for Saturday night’s game in Minneapolis.

It’s time for a Donovan Edwards touchdown

We have been pounding the drum for this for weeks it feels like, but it is Week 6 and Donovan Edwards is massively overdue for a breakout game. Last week was a step in the right direction in terms of running hard, but he seemed to wear down as the game went on. But Michigan was making an effort to get him going, and it has typically taken a solid volume of touches for Edwards to heat up.

This week, it’s time for him to hit a home run. Michigan has to do a better job of utilizing his strengths and getting him out in space. They are not going to force-feed him the ball, so he will have to make the most of his opportunities. We think he gets one on Saturday night.

Rod Moore nabs an interception

Junior safety Rod Moore has been working off rust early on this year, but he should start to settle in with more snaps and tonight feels like an opportunity for a vintage Moore performance. The Gophers are not particularly great at throwing the ball, but have a solid array of playmakers and Michigan will want to keep those guys in front of them. When he’s right, Moore is a heat-seeking missile that finds himself in the right place at the right time.

Not only will we see a Moore boomstick at some point, but he will also have a late-game interception to seal the victory for the visiting Wolverines.

Michigan scores on special teams

This one is a shot in the dark, but that’s what the bold predictions are for. If it feels like Michigan’s return game has been boring this year, that’s because it mostly has been. The punt return job is still split between Jake Thaw and Tyler Morris, who seem to have situational responsibilities. When Michigan just needs to field the ball, Thaw is the guy. When it wants to rack up some yards and potentially flip the flip position battle, Morris has been the one out there.

We’ve started to see freshman wideout Semaj Morgan on kickoffs recently, so he is a candidate to make a play, too. It just feels like Michigan is overdue for a splash play in this phase of the game, so maybe it comes via return or a blocked kick somewhere.
