Mike Gundy on Ollie Gordon’s standout performance vs. Kansas State

The Oklahoma State Cowboys jumped all over the Kansas State Wildcats in Stillwater on Friday night. They got an impressive performance from their sophomore running back, Ollie Gordon, who already gashed the KSU defense for a career-high, with time still remaining in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys led the game 23-7 with 12:03 remaining in the third quarter. The Wildcats have responded and battled back, cutting the OSU lead to 26-15 early in the fourth quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, ESPN sideline reporter Paul Carcaterra caught up with Mike Gundy to hear his thoughts on his tailback’s performance.

Why has Ollie Gordon been so successful in the run game for the Cowboys? “Well I think he’s doing a good job of getting downhill. We’ve covered guys up a little bit, which has helped. We’ve been able to throw the ball down the field some, which helps with the running game just a little bit,” Gundy said.

Early in the fourth quarter, Gordon had over 130 rushing yards and a touchdown on Saturday night.

What’s his team’s point of emphasis defensively down the stretch? “Well, we’ve got to try to get to the quarterback a little bit. And then, they’re doing a good job on the down blocking schemes and pulling. We’ve got to rally to that a little bit quicker. Trying to get them to shut down the run and then find a way to get to the quarterback on third down,” Gundy said.

Will Howard cut the Oklahoma State lead to 29-21 with 8:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats tried attempted to get the two-point conversion on a trick pass play, but it was dropped in the end zone.
