Michigan State coaches on the road during bye week

Michigan State coaches on the road during bye week

The Michigan State coaching and recruiting staffs continue working to secure what is left of the 2024 recruiting class, spending their bye week on the recruiting trail. The Spartan class currently holds 11 commitments, despite the uncertainty of who the next head coach will be, and which, if any, staff members are retained under the new HC. The uncertainty presents a challenge for the assistant coaches on the recruiting trail, with face-to-face communication being the best way to display their message to recruits.

Spartan interim head coach Harlon Barnett will be in Dayton (OH) this evening (Oct. 6) as Centerville High School takes on Springfield High School. Centerville is the home of former four-star Michigan State commitment Reggie Powers. Powers decommitted from the Spartans earlier this fall. He has since receiver offers from Oklahoma and UCLA, along with interest from Ohio State, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and many more. Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Randy Bates will also be in attendance for the high school matchup.

On the other sideline for Springfield includes four-star cornerback Aaron Scott, currently committed to Ohio State. Centerville (7-1) will travel to Springfield (3-4) for tonight’s matchup.

Along with Powers, three-star cornerback Camren Campbell of Tampa (FL) is the only other recruit to back off his Michigan State pledge since the firing of Mel Tucker so far.

Michigan State secondary coach Jim Salgado traveled to Syracuse (NY) this afternoon (Oct. 6), stopping in the home of three-star defensive back Syair Torrence at Christian Brothers Academy. Torrence committed to Michigan State after decommitting from the hometown program, Syracuse in June. He received an offer from Michigan at the end of July, remaining committing to the Spartans since.

Salgado also stopped in the school of three-star defensive back commitment Justin Denson on Wednesday (Oct. 4). Denson committed to Michigan State over a top five of Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M in July. Oklahoma has continued to recruit Denson hard, with Florida and other schools also looming. The Spartan commitment visited Michigan State in September for the Maryland game, as the Spartan staff does their best to keep him in the fold.
