Penn State focusing on fixing passing game
However, the passing game had a distinct point of ensuring the team was on the same page with quarterback Drew Allar. Coaches nit-picked route depth, stem, and depth to ensure they were run correctly. Later, the group worked on the deep passing game. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich emphasized the timing and chemistry in the passing game as something he intended to fix.
“It’s a big concern with me right now and to us as an entire staff. We’ve got to remedy that fast. And we got to be on point with our landmarks, and our depths of routes, and our timing. That is something that we’re going to address and that is a big issue we have to clean up,” Yurcich said.
Penn State head coach James Franklin thinks the team needs to keep getting reps together to improve chemistry and precision. The loss of Trey Wallace for the better part of September hampered the team’s perimeter attack and transfer Dante Cephas is still learning the offense, causing some bumpy play.
“Just more reps. Obviously, getting Trey back would help. He’s a guy that’s played a lot of football for us. We’ve got some new guys that we’ve got. We’re trying to work all of that out with all of the different coverages and techniques,” Franklin said.
Team goes through One-on-Ones
Finally, we got to see some rare one-on-one work with the offensive skill players and defensive backs. Several starters, specifically Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren, got work against Keaton Ellis and Zakee Wheatley. But the majority of the players getting work on Wednesday were the D-squad players and freshmen. Andrew Rappleyea and Kaden Saunders were among the most frequent players to work in the passing game.
