Which recruits are Penn State’s coaches expected to check up on Thursday?

Which recruits are Penn State’s coaches expected to check up on Thursday?

Penn State’s players may have a few days to relax this weekend with no game scheduled, but head coach James Franklin and his assistant coaches still have plenty of work to do. As we’ve seen throughout Franklin’s tenure, the bye week is the ideal opportunity for the entire coaching staff to hit the road to watch Penn State’s committed players and other key targets.

Franklin was asked about his plans during Wednesday night’s post-practice media scrum.

“Obviously, we want to get out and see all of our commitments, and while we do that, we see the guys in the area as well and map out what games we want to get to and what region,” Franklin said. “I’ll leave [Wednesday night] and be out [Thursday] through Saturday night. We’ll have a coordinator and GA and veteran practice [Thursday] and then the young guys, or non-travel guys, they’ll have some responsibilities Friday morning. The [players] will be off for the weekend, but the coaches will be out recruiting.”

Below is the latest intel on where we expect Penn State’s coaches to be on Thursday.

Expected Visits for Thursday, Oct. 5

– With practice still scheduled for this afternoon, only a few assistant coaches are out on the road Thursday. The majority will travel tonight and begin meeting with coaches on Friday morning.

– We’re told that Franklin and tight ends coach Ty Howle began their day in Connecticut to meet with future tight end Luke Reynolds and his family. Reynolds has already paid and been accepted into Penn State. Because of that, Franklin and his staff can meet with Reynolds and his family in person and even off his high school campus.

– We expect both Franklin and Howle to then travel down to North Carolina to check up on 2024 offensive line commit Eagan Boyer at Hough High School in Cornelius.

– While in North Carolina, we expect Franklin and Howle to also meet with high school coaches for a handful of top 2025 prospects. Four-star safety JaDon Blair, who plays at Mount Tabor in Winston-Salem, should be one of the schools they stop at. Four-star wide receiver Shamarius Peterkin also plays at Mount Tabor. Defensive lineman Isaiah Campbell from Southern High School in Durham is another player we expect them to check up on. Cambell included the Nittany Lions among his Top 10 back in July.

Fitz: Five committed prospects Penn State hopes to get on campus this fall

– It’s unclear currently which other 2025 North Carolina prospects they plan to check up on, but Penn State has also already offered TE Gus Ritchey (committed to NC State), QB Bryce Baker (committed to North Carolina) DE Bryce Davis and OL David Sanders.

– As we’ve seen over the years, running back coach Ja’Juan Seider will spend much of his time in Florida the next few days. Today, he’s expected to be in Central Florida to check up on prospects in and around Orlando.

– One stop he’s already made was to Jones High School in Wildwood, Fla., as 2025 wide receiver Vernell Brown tweeted this morning that he’s earned an offer from Penn State. Brown holds a three-star rating by On3. Other notable offers include Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and Tennessee.

– Penn State continues to chip away at 2024 DL LJ McCray in Daytona Beach. It’s unclear if Seider will stop there today, but we would expect someone from the staff to stop at Mainland High School in the next few days.

– Other 2025 recruits that are potential stops in Central Florida include RB Taevion Swint (committed to UCF), OL Max Buchanan, WR Jayvan Boggs, DE Javion Hilson, DL Christian Hudson, DL Jarquez Carter, Saf. Jermichael Gillis, Saf. Ivan Taylor and Saf. Rashad Johnson.
