Caleb Williams shares impressions of Arizona’s defense after Washington game
In Week 6, the USC Trojans will get their first live look at the Arizona Wildcats’ defense. The Trojans have seen what the Wildcats can do against a high-powered offense as they slowed down the Pac-12’s top offensive unit, the Washington Huskies, despite losing to them 31-24.
Ahead of their mashup with their Pac-12 foe, USC quarterback Caleb Williams shared his impressions of Arizona’s defense and his thoughts on how they successfully limited Washington’s offense.
“We watched that game, and they allowed them; Washington ended up winning, but they did a really good job, to be honest with you,” said Williams. “Washington is a high-powered office with a lot of talented players. They did some unique things and just kept them from having those explosive plays on the field. They kind of stopped the running game as much as they could… They stopped them from throwing the ball down the field and being so explosive as they usually are.
Washington still put up 474 yards of total offense with 363 through the air. The Huskies were also efficient on 3rd and 4th down conversions, converting 6-10 of their 3rd down attempts and their lone one on 4th down. One could argue that Washington did more damage to themselves as they Committed 12 penalties on the night worth 125 yards.
While Arizona played solid defense against Washington, it still wasn’t enough for them to win the game. And if they play that level of defense against USC, expect Caleb Williams and company to follow suit of their neighbors of the north and take down the Wildcats on Saturday.
Williams separating himself as top quarterback eligible for 2024 NFL Draft
Through five games, USC quarterback Caleb Williams has done nothing but reaffirm his status as the potential top quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class. ESPN draft analysts Jordan Reid and Matt Miller recently examined why on an episode of the “First Draft” podcast.
Simply, Williams has managed to live up to the massive expectations placed on him, a reigning Heisman winner and one of the most high-profile stars in the sport. And Reid has been impressed with the apparent ease that Williams has continued to excel.
“Just seeing how easy he makes the game look, that’s what is so special about Caleb. He goes and he makes the easy throws but then he’ll come back and he’ll make a miraculous off-script, out-of-pocket throw that just wows you,” Reid said. “So, Caleb has been as advertised and I think he’s done everything that he needs to do to still be in the pole position with this quarterback and I think he’s the unquestioned No. 1 overall pick, nothing’s changed in that department, to me.”
Williams has been lights out in 2023 to build on an impressive 2022 Heisman campaign. If anything, he’s been better as a passer and at the finer points of being a quarterback.
