Shane Beamer reacts to NCAA considering shorter transfer portal windows

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced that a council had agreed to change the length of the transfer portal windows in all sports to 45 days, reducing the amount of time the portal is open in college football.

Players seeking a free one-time transfer must enter their name into the NCAA transfer portal during one of the transfer portal windows.

For football the windows are 30 days following the conclusion of the regular season, as well as a 15-day window during the spring. That’s a change from 45 days following the regular season.

The rule changes won’t be official until an NCAA meeting concludes later today, but it’s got some advocates already.

“It would help it, I think everybody’s in agreement that the window is too long as it is,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. “I would be in favor of just continuing to shorten it. To me, if a guy is planning on transferring from your program, he knows that when the window opens and doesn’t necessarily need 45 days or 30 days or whatever it might be to figure that out.”

One of the things that the shortened window is attempting to combat is potential tampering that can take place with schools trying to comb through other rosters for talent.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey had previously raised that as a concern and a reason to shorten NCAA transfer portal windows.

“Some of the behaviors that really raise questions about tampering, the use of NIL, those seem to happen, not exclusively, but later as that portal drags on,” Sankey said. “And the observation from our coaches is, ‘Can we reduce those windows?’ I think there’s a need to engage.”

The sport moved quickly to address the issue, with today’s likely changes addressing at least some of the concern.

Beamer still believes the transfer portal windows could be even shorter.

“For us, the season ends, we have end-of-season meetings with our players and they have a pretty good idea of where they stand and vice versa, so we always try to have open and honest communication with our players,” Beamer said. “I think it would be great. In favor of it, and I would say most coaches across the country would say the same.

“And same thing for the players too. Certainly want them to have the freedom that they need to have in order to do the things that they want to do that’s best for their career, but also try to help them with that process also.”
