ScoopDuck RoundTable: Oregon Offensive Player of the Year
Folks, I hope you didn’t blink, because we are already one third of the way through this season. Yes an entire third of the pie has already been eaten. And the remaining 2/3 of the pie won’t last long.
So with the bye week at hand, we figured we’d offer up some of our awards for the season so far. Some things to keep the discussions ongoing.
We start them off with our picks for the offensive MVP of the season so far.
Corpatty: Bo Nix
Nix is having another sensational year, arguably performing even more efficiently than last year if that’s possible. He’s the one who makes entire the Oregon offense go, so he has to be my pick for offensive player of the year thus far.
Jarrid Denney: Troy Franklin
What else can we say about Troy Franklin at this point? Through five games, the Ducks’ star junior is on pace to re-write the Oregon record book. As I wrote in my five takeaways column after the Stanford game, if he continues at his current rate, he will finish the year with 83 receptions for 1,391 yards. He’s become a more physical player since the end of last season and is an automatic first down any time he gets single-man coverage. I’m really excited to see what he can do during the stretch run of the season.
Joel Gunderson: Troy Franklin
Again…pick your poison. I could name five players from the Ducks’ offense and make a valid case for them being the offensive player of the year to this point, but it has to be Franklin. For a program so defined by offense, the one position they have yet to have a true breakout performer has been the receiver position, and Franklin has erased that already.
The numbers are great, but more than anything, Franklin is the guy that fans and his quarterback alike fully trust. He has the size, the intangibles, the speed, the hands…name a trail of a true #1 receiver, and Franklin has them all.
And, as the weather turns and rain comes, Franklin’s value increases. The best of the best show up when it’s most needed or when the situation isn’t ideal. That’s what he is, the one missing piece from Oregon’s past.
Doug Scott: Troy Franklin
The obvious answer is Bo Nix, and he certainly deserves it but I’m gonna go with the guy who is on pace to obliterate every major Oregon receiving record. Troy Franklin has been consistent and sensational through 5 games despite seeing little action in the final 20 minutes of 4 of them.
Jhop: Bo Nix
It’s plain and simple and here’s why. If Oregon were to lose Troy Franklin, it would hurt. They would miss him but survive. If Oregon were to lose Bo Nix, it would be, well let’s not imagine that scenario. While I think Ty Thompson has gotten better, we know it wouldn’t be even close to the same team. So by that measurement alone I have Bo Nix as my MVP at the 1/3 point.
