Observations on J.J. McCarthy, Michigan football quarterbacks from spring game

Let’s start with the players who did not play. Some were known injuries coming in, while others were held out for undisclosed reasons. The following notable Michigan players did not take the field: Senior running back Blake Corum (leg), junior running back Donovan Edwards (hand), freshman running back Cole Cabana (lower body), sophomore running back CJ Stokes (undisclosed), junior linebacker Junior Colson (leg), sophomore cornerback Will Johnson (lower body), graduate offensive lineman Drake Nugent (undisclosed), senior offensive lineman Myles Hinton (undisclosed), junior safety Rod Moore (undisclosed), senior wide receiver A.J. Henning (undisclosed), sophomore wide receiver Tyler Morris (undisclosed), junior EDGE TJ Guy (leg), graduate cornerback German Green (knee).

Here’s a look at the participation chart for offense and defense (this is not official). Some players are listed twice if they played multiple positions.

Notes on offense: McCarthy played the entire first half, after the original plan, per the radio broadcast, was for him to just participate in the first quarter. Gentry started at left tackle for the Michigan Maize team, before sliding down to left guard for the majority of the afternoon. Keegan was taken out of the game after the first quarter and Bounds was inserted at left tackle. Giudice played both ways, starting on both offense and defense for the Maize. Wilson played a bit in the second quarter but was not targeted in the pass game.

Notes on defense: Each team began the Michigan spring game in different formations. The Blue had three defensive tackles and one EDGE, while the Maize had three tackles, two EDGEs and four defensive backs (as opposed to five, like the Blue). Bennett played the majority of the game, after Harrell started and then came out. Klunder got a surprising amount of run at defensive tackle. McBurrows played both cornerback and nickel (so did Sainristil).

Michigan had plenty of players participate on special teams. Notably, junior Tommy Doman kicked off and place kicked. Junior walk-on Charlie Mentzer also kicked extra points. Senior long snapper Greg Tarr, like Doman, had a white jersey on and snapped for both teams. Junior walk-on Joe Taylor was holding on extra points.
