Ohio State commitment talks Gamecocks visit and interest

Jontae Gilbert made a very early commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes, pledging in the summer of 2022. The South Carolina Gamecocks and others, however, have continued pursuit of the talented defensive back.

On Saturday, the Atlanta (Georgia) Douglass product made his way to Columbia to get a closer look at Shane Beamer’s program.

“I loved it,” he told GamecockCentral.com. “Coach (Torrian) Gray, Coach Beamer, they really love me. They love my tape, feel like I could fit in well. They’re trying to get me to flip.”

Gilbert is tabbed by the On3 Industry Ranking as one of the nation’s top overall prospects. He’s ranked number 10 in the country for the 2025 class, checking in as the second-best cornerback prospect nationally and as the number four player in the state of Georgia.

With Gilbert’s size – 6-foot-1, 180-pounds – and skill set, he has the profile of a player that could theoretically play anywhere in the secondary.

Torrian Gray just put the finishing touches on developing a pair of corners with the Gamecocks who had similar physical traits who project as top 100 NFL Draft picks: Cam Smith and Darius Rush.

“We talked about that,” Gilbert said of his positional outlook in Columbia. “He (Gray) really likes me at corner with my size, good technique and stuff, so I can cover.”

One of the activities that Gilbert took part in during his time on campus was watching a morning spring practice session.

“I loved it. They have guys that want to work first. He likes to play young guys. DQ Smith, he had a great practice, the way he moves,” Gilbert said.

As well, the Peach State prospect’s bonds with the USC coaching staff seem to be continuing to get better.

“We’re building a relationship. They want to get me back down. I feel like I’m wanted down there and needed,” Gilbert explained.

Aside from South Carolina, three other programs – Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee – were identified by Gilbert as schools that continue to recruit him.

“I’m really open as of right now,” he said.

Up next on the visit docket for Gilbert are trips to Ohio State on April 4 and to Georgia Tech on April 7.

What’s going to make the difference for Gilbert as to where he ultimately ends up at the college level?

“Really, developing me as a player and the relationships and where I can get on the field early,” he said.
