BOILING OVER: Over 40 visitors on tap for Illinois game

Welcome to “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information clearinghouse, a spot for assorted bits of Purdue news, analysis and so on and so forth, intended for GoldandBlack.com members and GoldandBlack.com members only.

Please welcome BOILING OVER sponsor T&W Design and Build, an Indianapolis construction management company since 1968 with proud Purdue graduates that specialize in changing the way customers think about construction.

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

• It is believed 2025 CB Tarrion Grant will announce his commitment to Purdue soon which would make him the third pledge in the Boilermakers’ 2025 class, joining LB Keylan Abrams and QB Sawyer Anderson.

Grant, who visited for the Syracuse game earlier this month, would be a big addition. He’s a four-star 6-4 gem with an impressive list of offers. Walters mentioned he had a silent 2025 commitment at his radio show last week. Grant is that guy.

Let’s see if this happens.

• The 2024 class is still looking for a tight end. Purdue has its eye on some bigger receivers who could become tight ends.

As mentioned below, the staff will play host to a 2024 TE: Levi Smiley of Cincinnati. Tight end is the one yawning need in Purdue’s 2024 class. Smiley could earn an offer this weekend.

The 6-4, 220-pound Smiley is a late-bloomer from Purcell Marian High. Purdue is still going through the process of figuring out who he is and will get to see him in person this weekend and see where it goes.

• The staff may shop the JC ranks for some help on the offensive line and also at receiver to add to the 2024 class. Stay tuned.

TE Levi Smiley, Cincinnati’s Purcell Marian High

• Purdue is slated to have 43 visitors on hand for this Saturday’s game vs. Illinois. Two legacies will be in town: 2026 RB Mike Rose, the son of the former linebacker of the same name, and 2026 ATH Jett Goldsberry, the son of Jon.

No uncommitted visitor is more ballyhooed or desired than four-star 2025 Indianapolis Ben Davis CB Mark Zackery.

A look at this weekend’s visitors:

PURDUE FOOTBALL

• DL Damarjhe Lewis was seen on a scooter with his right leg propped up. He had a bone spur removed and should be back soon. Lewis missed all of 2022 with a knee injury.

• K Ben Freehill, it is believed, will miss another game. He could be back for the trip to Iowa on Oct. 7. Last week with Freehill out, Julio Macias handled placements and Caleb Krockover kickoffs.

• The o-line has had its issues in 2023. There is a chance Missouri transfer Luke Griffin could get an extended look on Saturday at right guard with Jalen Grant having some struggles. Griffin has looked good of late in practice.

Speaking of the o-line, tackle Daniel Johnson still isn’t ready (knee).

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Purdue will be having two official visitors in this weekend.

Class of 2025 forward/center Daniel Jacobsen will make a junior-year official. He is one of Purdue’s established offers/targets for the ’25 class. He’s from New Mexico but attends Brewster Academy out east.

Purdue needs frontcourt dudes in that class, which may have as few as one hard opening (some new recruiting parlance I’m pioneering here*). Jacobsen will be one of several such players to be visiting this fall. Trent Sisley is unofficially visiting unofficially in October, and Eric Reibe is coming officially.

*Hard opening: The number of scholarships available on paper. Soft opening: The number available on paper qualified by over-sign contingencies or moving parts with current players.)

Purdue’s also bringing in 2024 guard C.J. Cox for what we assume to be an official visit, though it’s not like Purdue to generally to bring in players who haven’t been offered for officials. Maybe he has been offered. There are some blanks here we still have to fill in.

This one is interesting, because as you know, Purdue is awaiting word from Gicarri Harris and Travis Perry, but neither player have made decisions yet (or at least public ones). Gotta keep recruiting ’til they do. Purdue does have an absolute priority placed on ball-handlers, which is part of the reason it’s willing to over-sign for Harris and Perry. Maybe Cox becomes part of that same tier? He has lots of mid-major offers (and Ivy League opportunities), but Purdue has been out to the prep school corridor out east a few times so has seen him live.

Harris is done with his visits, but apparently sticking to his stated mid-October target date for a decision. Absolutely no reason to think that’s gone sideways on Purdue, but it would obviously have liked to have it wrapped up by now. He has cited October all along, so this isn’t some new development.

Perry, we’ll see. He has seemed committed to going the distance with this even at the risk of doors closing. Some have. (Purdue has not.) Still has Ole Miss and Kentucky (unofficial) to take.

Other visitors for Purdue this weekend.

EJ Walker: The 2025 forward was offered early and is at least being kept on the line.
Gabe Sularski: A 2026 wing/shooting guard from Chicagoland.
Tay Kinney: The 2026 PG from Cincinnati has big-time offers already: Ohio State, Louisville, Xavier, etc.

PURDUE BASKETBALL

• There will be streaming available for the Arkansas exhibition, as UA will be announcing shortly, apparently.
