Looking at Miami’s individual recruiting battles with Florida, FSU as Hurricanes continue to build 2024 class

Looking at Miami’s individual recruiting battles with Florida, FSU as Hurricanes continue to build 2024 class

We already have a strong idea of what the majority of Miami’s 2024 recruiting class will look like with 22 prospects committed to the Hurricanes, but the Canes are still in a handful of recruiting battles with Florida and Florida State for both committed and uncommitted prospects.

Here’s a look at some of the 2024 prospects Miami is still battling with against its in-state rivals:

Miami battling Florida AND Florida State

Five-Star Plus+ WR Jeremiah Smith | Ohio State commit
+++ Miami and Florida State are the two schools we’ve heard most over the last few months, but Smith has kept the door open for Florida too. Smith visited the Gators this weekend for Florida’s game against Charlotte, plans to attend Miami’s Oct. 7 conference opener against Georgia Tech and continues to be aggressively pursued by the Seminoles. The battle for runner-up may ultimately be moot if Smith indeed signs with Ohio State, but all three programs continue to be in contention for the country’s No. 1 prospect. We like where Miami stands at the moment, particularly if the Hurricanes keep winning this fall, but it’d be hard to envision major activity happening before December.

Five-Star DL LJ McCray | Uncommitted
+++ Miami, Florida and Florida State have all wanted to land McCray in this cycle, and his stock has only risen as he climbed to the country’s No. 8 recruit in the latest On300 rankings update. He has an official visit to Florida State set for Oct. 7 after visiting Miami for the Hurricanes’ game against Texas A&M Sept. 9 and and Florida Sept. 16, but the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has continued to trend favorably for Florida and Georgia, and CaneSport agrees with the top of the top of the RPM. Miami isn’t out of this race, but Florida has been in a favorable position for McCray for awhile.

Four-star S Zay Mincey | Uncommitted
+++ Florida’s three major programs have been aggressively fighting for Mincey since the start of 2023, and while Alabama has been a name we’ve also heard, this has been a major in-state battle for some time. Miami, Florida and Florida State have all pushed hard for Mincey, who just climbed into the top 30 in the latest On300 rankings update, and he said on his last Miami visit Sept. 9. he was planning on making a silent commitment before the end of the month. He’ll publicly announce his decision at the Under Armour All-American game in January, but there’s still reason to be optimistic about Miami’s chances.

Canes battling Florida State

Four-star DL Artavius Jones | Miami commit
+++ Florida State has continued to fight for Jones, who Warchant reports they believe Jones will take an in-season official visit to Tallahassee this fall, but Miami has shored up its position with Jones every time the Seminoles have posed a threat. The Hurricanes still appear to be the favorite here, and we don’t think there’s reason for Miami fans to fret about his recruitment, and while the Seminoles don’t quite feel like an outright threat, they’re definitely a team to watch here.

Four-star WR Lawayne McCoy | Florida State commit
+++ Miami has hung around the picture for McCoy, who committed to the Seminoles over the Hurricanes earlier this summer, and we feel like the Canes have become a team to watch. Florida State is still the leader here and has remained in good standing with McCoy, but if Miami continues its hot start and builds on its much-improved receiver play, the Miami-Florida State game in Tallahassee could have potential implications.
