No. 1 prospect Jeremiah Smith impressed by Miami 3-0 start, sets sights on October visit: ‘Doing what they’re doing, it’s impressing me for sure’
Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Five-Star Plus+ 2024 receiver Jeremiah Smith, the No. 1 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, has long made it clear Miami’s chances of flipping him from Ohio State will be directly tied to its on-field performance this fall.
And through three games, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect has liked what he’s seen from the Hurricanes.
“I like how the offense is looking, the way the program is going in the right direction,” said Smith, who committed to Ohio State in Dec. 2022. “I just like the way Miami is looking right now. I’ve just got to wait and see how they do for the rest of the season.”
Smith has been an advocate for receivers coach Kevin Beard and first-year offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, who coached his cousin, NFL quarterback Geno Smith, while he was the offensive coordinator at West Virginia. Smith feels Miami has met its standard through its first three games of the season — a 38-3 over Miami (Ohio), a 48-33 win over No. 23 Texas A&M and a 48-7 win over Bethune-Cookman — en route to its No. 22 ranking.
But Miami is only three games into its second year under head coach Mario Cristobal, and while the team’s offensive production through first three games of the season have been encouraging, Smith knows the Hurricanes still have eight games against ACC foes.
“(Conference play) is gonna be big,” Smith said. “They’ve still got to play against conference teams like Clemson and all of the other schools in the ACC. But Miami, I feel like they’re going to do something this year, for sure. You can see it so far this year. Coach (Beard) and coach Mario (Cristobal) kept their word with me. Doing what they’re doing, it’s impressing me for sure.”
Smith to take game day visit to Miami – Georgia Tech
Smith initially planned to take game day visits to Miami for the Hurricanes’ home games against Texas A&M and Clemson, but after choosing to take game day visits to Ohio State those weekends instead, he now plans to return to Hard Rock for Miami’s Oct. 7 game against Georgia Tech. It will be Miami’s conference opener following a bye the last week of September.
CaneSport’s Take
Miami is still in the race for Smith, but as we’ve continued to hound, the program’s chances to flip him from Ohio State will be directly tied to the Hurricanes’ on-field success, particularly on offense. But seeing how the remainder of Miami’s schedule looks currently, if the Canes live up to expectations, the race could get interesting in December.
