Recruiting Humidor: Five-star updates, Texas-Wyoming visitors, and more
Inside Texas dives into the latest from a number of five-star targets and the updated Texas-Wyoming recruiting visitor list in Friday’s Recruiting Humidor.
Ryan Wingo, WR, St. Louis (MO) Saint Louis University
The On3 Industry Ranking five-star receiver will be in Austin this weekend for the Texas-Wyoming game.
Wingo and Texas have been trending nicely since late summer, early fall. But Missouri is right there and pushing as well.
This is the time for coffee, Steve Sarkisian. Texas has the momentum in its corner, and after the Wingo family watched the Texas win over Alabama over the weekend, the Horns have set themselves up nicely.
Wingo is still set to visit Tennessee on September 30th, but unsure if that trip still happens.
Solomon Williams, EDGE/LB, Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Sunshine State native will make his official visit to Texas this weekend, with key family members. Texas DC Pete Kwiatkowski, head coach Steve Sarkisian and a couple of other staff members have been in constant communication with Williams since his July unofficial visit.
Williams released a top five earlier in the week that included Texas A&M, Clemson, Oregon, Alabama, and Texas. The top three, however, are Alabama, Oregon and Texas.
Williams is scheduled to officially visit Oregon on September 23rd weekend for the Ducks game against Colorado. He’s also currently scheduled to make a return trip to Alabama for the Tennessee game.
Corian Gipson, DB, Lancaster (Texas) – Clemson commit
Inside Texas went to see On3 four-star defensive back and Clemson pledge on Thursday night in McKinney.
Gipson mentions he’s solid to Clemson and Dabo Swinney, but don’t be surprised if you see Gipson show up to a game in Austin over the next few months, including Texas-Oklahoma from the Cotton Bowl in October.
A big factor for the Longhorns is his relationship with cornerback coach Terry Joseph.
“He just keeps lifting me up,” Gipson told Inside Texas, about Joseph. “Even after my injury, he wanted to make sure. That’s good that he still cares about me, even when I committed to another different team.”
Gipson’s injury is undisclosed. /
Brandon Baker, OT, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
Texas continues to be the team talked about the most behind the scenes heading into a September 24th announcement. The 6-foot-4.5, 303-pound athletic right tackle is scheduled to officially visit Nebraska this weekend. Texas, Ohio State, Oregon and Nebraska are the four under strong consideration.
The Ducks confidence has continued to slip in recent weeks.
Kobe Black, CB, Waco (Texas) Connally
While we’ve been waiting on the On3 Industry Ranking five-star to make a decision, his quote-tweet of Colin Simmons hourglass tweet seems to suggest it may actually be closer.
Black is expected to be in Stillwater this weekend for the Oklahoma State game to watch his brother, Korie Black, for the Pokes.
Texas is the clear leader here, with Texas A&M, LSU, Oregon, and Ohio State hanging around the rim.
Terry Bussey, ATH, Timpson (Texas)
While there’s a chance he could be in Austin, Bussey won’t know for certain until Saturday morning. TexAgs reported he’ll be in attendance for the Texas A&M-New Mexico game this morning, but Bussey tells Inside Texas that’s premature and not accurate.
Texas is still taking swing at the On3 No. 2 athlete in the Class of 2024.
Texas and Texas A&M verbals
Inside Texas believes there is currently close to a 50-50 shot at the Longhorns eventually flipping one or two Texas A&M verbals depending on how the season shakes out. Jasper High linebacker Tyanthony Smith remains in contact with Texas, and is likely to step foot on campus during the season. Texas has never backed off of the 6-foot-1.5, 210-pounder with a 79-inch wingspan.
