Oregon Week 3 practice observations: Jestin Jacobs returns for Ducks, Cam Lewis absent

As Oregon continues its preparation for Saturday’s showdown with Hawaii in Eugene, the Ducks continue to roll with a mostly healthy roster.

The opening 20 minutes of Wednesday’s practice were open to reporters and photographers, during which the Ducks went through stretching and warmups, special teams work, and individual position drills.

Here are some notes and observations from those periods.

Injuries and absences

Oregon linebacker Jestin Jacobs was back at practice on Wednesday after he was absent during the open portion of Tuesday’s practice.

Jacobs, who is a projected starter at inside linebacker, has been limited since the start of fall camp as he works his way back from a major knee injury he suffered last fall. During the majority of the open practices this season, Jacob has been wearing trainers.

On Wednesday, he was in cleats but did not participate during the lone position drill that reporters were able to watch.

On Wednesday, just three scholarship players were absent. The most notable of those was senior placekicker Camden Lewis. Additionally, junior kicker Andrew Boyle and freshman offensive lineman Lipe Moala were not seen.

Freshman defensive lineman Tevita Pome’e has been sidelined for the majority of the season with an injury but was in pads and practiced Wednesday.

Receiver Kris Hutson, who has not played in either of Oregon’s games this season, was full-go on Wednesday. So was receiver Josh Delgado, who is continuing to progress after suffering a significant leg injury during spring ball. Offensive lineman Nishad Strother, who returned to practice on Tuesday after missing nearly three weeks due to injury, was a limited participant once again.

Practice Observations

With Lewis and Boyle absent, freshman Grant Meadors was Oregon’s lone available placekicker on Wednesday. He worked on onside kicks during the special teams period — along with long-snapper Keller Stafford, who booted a few well-placed kicks while filling in.

Bucky Irving, Noah Whittington, Jordan James, Nikko Reed, and Rodrick Pleasant were back returning kicks, as has been the case all season.

Tez Johnson, Troy Franklin, Gary Bryant Jr., and Kris Hutson fielded punts from James and Dunne.

During the third period, offensive and defensive linemen went head-to-head during a competitive period. Some of the more notable matchups were as follows.

Kawika Rogers and Junior Angilau vs. Johnny Bowens III and Terrance GreenDave Iuli and Faaope Laloulu vs. My’Keil Gardner and Jordan BurchAngilau and George Silva vs. Bowens and Green

Post-practice media

Wednesday’s practice is set to conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT. Afterward, head coach Dan Lanning, offensive lineman Faaope Laloulu, offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson, and safety Evan Williams are scheduled to speak with reporters.
