Ryan Day assesses how much piece of mind he got from making official QB decision

Ryan Day assesses how much piece of mind he got from making official QB decision

Ryan Day feels a little lighter. On Tuesday, the Ohio State head coach discussed the relief of naming Kyle McCord the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback.

“I guess it’s one less thing, still got a lot of other things to worry about,” Day said. “But I think it has played itself out. I think we sat here two weeks ago and said, ‘We’ll get a chance in two weeks to at least have two games to look at and see where it’s at’. That’s kind of how it went.

“You never know how it’s going to go, right? It could go a million different ways. You don’t know, you don’t have a crystal ball. But here we are. I think it’s played out. And there’s practice. We’ve seen enough in practice to lead us to believe that this is the right thing to do.”

While the decision alleviates pressure from Day, many outsiders already felt like the choice had been made. After all, McCord started in Ohio State’s first two games this season. Further, the junior QB has done a solid job.

Through two contests, McCord is 34 of 53 passing for 497 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. McCord looked particularly excellent in Ohio State’s 35-7 win over Youngstown State on Saturday. After the impressive showing, McCord was asked if he felt like enough to earn officially earn the starting spot behind center.

Kyle McCord responds to the pressure

“That’s not up to me,” McCord said. “That’s a question for Coach Day. Like I said earlier, I think the only thing I am worried about when I am on the field is making the most out of my opportunities. Whether that’s every single drive, that’s great. Every other drive? That’s great. Just one drive, that’s great.

“Whatever opportunities I get, that’s what I am going to try to make the most out of.”

McCord will have no shortage of opportunities moving forward. In just two weeks, OSU will take on No. 9 Notre Dame on the road. The Fighting Irish will be the Buckeyes’ first ranked opponent this season. As for Day’s expectations, he hopes to see his QB replicate his performance from Saturday.

“I think regardless of the opponent, when you play at Ohio Stadium and you get your second start, you have to see how people are going to react,” Day said following the win on Saturday. “I thought he was much more poised in this game than the first one, I think that’s natural. So again, we’ll see if we can build on that. But like you said, bigger challenges ahead.”
