Jhop’s Ultimate 25 – Version 1.0

Jhop’s Ultimate 25 – Version 1.0

Welcome back everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these. I didn’t get one put together for the 2023 recruiting cycle. And it was something I thought a lot about the last few months.

For those that don’t know, the original ScoopDuck, AKA ScoopDuck OG, had a tab that kept the top 25 names on a list. I called it Jhop’s Ultimate 25, which I felt was a fitting name.

The list was 25 recruits in that current recruiting class that I felt are the top names to watch. Not a next to commit. Not a list of predictions. It is really a list I blend together with the names I feel Oregon has prioritized early on and has a LEGITIMATE shot at signing. Which means I don’t just go down the rankings and list the top 3 guys at each position group.

Additionally, if a recruit commits to Oregon, they come off the list. And often times, the list has a pretty high success rate. Also if a recruit commits elsewhere and shuts down their recruitment, they will likely be pulled off the list, but not always.

What I typically try and do is get at least a name or two in each position but it comes together based on need. For instance, Oregon doesn’t have a QB commit in this class so I’ll probably list a couple names. If they do land a commit, they are likely done at the position so when I update the list, it likely won’t have any quarterbacks listed.

Make sense?

Ok, well here is version 1.0. This will get pinned in the recruiting thread for future reference. I will update this list as needed throughout the recruiting cycle as commitments take place.

I will be using On3 Industry rankings, just for reference.

Quarterback:

Current Commits: None

3-Star Luke Moga

4-Star Michael Van Buren

Analysis: So as you can see I only have two listed here. And obviously Dylan Raiola and Air Noland are not on this list. Simply due to current chances I think they commit to Oregon. The Ducks seem to have much better odds with Moga and MVB at the moment. The great thing about this list is it can evolve. But at least it gives you a barometer of the top names to watch as we get through the cycle.

Oregon is likely to only sign one prep quarterback in this cycle.

Running Back:

Current Commits: None

4-Star Jason Brown

4-Star Nathaniel Frazier

Analysis: I could list probably 4-5 deep that Oregon is in on at running back in this cycle. But I only have room for 25 names, which means I have to be efficient. I believe Oregon will probably only sign one back in this cycle but the door is open to sign two. Right now I think Brown and Frazier are the two top targets Oregon has a reasonable shot with early on.

Wide Receiver:

Current Commits: Jordan Anderson, Tyseer Denmark

4-Star Ryan Pellum

4-Star Xavier Jordan

Analysis: With Oregon having two early commits here, it’s going to be hard for Junior Adams to get Dan Lanning to let him sign four or more. So my bet early on here is he’ll shoot for one more and see how the numbers fall. Which means I can only list a few and these are the top names I feel confident in now. Of course this could change but I would keep close tabs on these two names for now. FWIW, I had a tough time not listing Gatlin Bair here but it was hard to keep it at 25.

Tight End:

Current Commits: A.J. Pugliano

4-Star Ryner Swanson

4-Star Roger Saleapaga

Analysis: Coach Mehringer is going to be hard-pressed to only sign 1 in this class but equally hard-pressed to sign 3. So adding 1 more makes sense. I wanted to add Jaden Reddell to this list but I’m short on room and until he visits I think Oregon has a lot of work to do there. For now here are the two names to keep tabs on.

Offensive Line:

Current Commits: Fox Crader

4-Star Brandon Baker

4-Star Bennett Warren

4-Star Manasse Itete

4-Star Preston Taumua

3-Star Devin Brooks

Analysis: Clearly this is a group that needs to do a lot of work this cycle. Thus me adding 5 names here but could easily have 7 or 8. This represents the top names to know for now, that I think Oregon has a legitimate shot at currently. And of course that means Oregon has to hang on to Fox Crader in the meantime.

Defensive Line:

Current Commits: Jaxson Jones

4-Star Elijah Rushing

5-Star Williams Nwaneri

4-Star Aydin Breland

Analysis: So I’d love to add about 7 names here. But in order to keep it at 25 total, I had to be efficient. Oregon has an EDGE committed already in Jones, which means Rushing would be a great second commit there. I listed Nwaneri and Breland because they are interior guys and that’s going to be a key area for Oregon. Of course there are other names that I can list here but this is the main group I suggest tracking for now.

Linebacker:

Current Commits: None

4-Star Justin Williams

4-Star Dylan Williams

4-Star Kamar Mothudi

Analysis: If there were two position groups I would say Oregon should most prioritize, it’s linebacker and offensive line. Those are both massive needs this cycle. Which is why I have 3 names here and could easily add 3 or 4 more. I think the Ducks will look to land roughly 4 at this position group and until they start landing them, you’ll see a lot of names here. Not listing Brayden Platt was really difficult.

Defensive Back:

Current Commits: None

4-Star Zabien Brown

4-Star Dakoda Fields

3-Star Miles Lockhart

4-Star Aaron Flowers

4-Star Jason Mitchell

Analysis: This doesn’t even do this group justice but it’s a start. Coach Meat and coach Hampton has Oregon in the mix for a number of top prospects nationally. And after linebacker and offensive line I would say safety is the next biggest need in this cycle. Flowers is set to commit in the next week so he’s going to come off the board one way or another soon.

Athlete:

Current Commits: None

4-Star Aaron Butler

Analysis: I had a tough time making this list only 25. But I had to make room for Butler because he’s such a dynamic athlete. I had a tough time putting him at one spot so I just went with athlete. He’s also into track which is another reason the Ducks are among his top five.
