Georgia TE commit Colton Heinrich excited about the competition in Athens

Colton Heinrich committed to Georgia back in May. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end out of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons visited Athens a few times, he got to know the coaching staff and felt right at home.

Since committing to the Bulldogs, there have been no second thoughts. The three-star is locked in with his commitment and excited about his future between the hedges.

“We are the best of the best at Georgia,” Heinrich told On3. “We are back-to-back national champions. Everyone there is there for the same reason – to run it back and be the best team in the country. It is going to be exciting to get up there, get in that environment and compete.”

Kirby Smart is 82-15 as head coach at Georgia and has his alma mater on top of college football. Heinrich loves Smart’s mentality and the way he runs the program he will be a part of.

“Coach Smart is not thinking about a three-peat. He just wants to work and dominate. At the end of the day, Coach Smart and Georgia have history, but this team hasn’t done anything yet. That is how he looks at it.

“It is just about this team competing day after day and this team being the best it can be. I expect Georgia to be great again and keep being that well-oiled machine it has been the last few years when I get there.”

Heinrich was at Georgia last weekend for the Tennessee-Martin game. He will be back for the South Carolina match-up, then in Jacksonville for the Georgia vs. Florida contest.

Heinrich feels at home at Georgia

Todd Hartley has created quite the tight end room in Athens. Brock Bowers is the top tight end in college football. Oscar Delp hopes to be the next star at that position. Lawson Luckie and Pearce Spurlin joined that room this year.

“I welcome the challenge at Georgia,” Heinrich said. “That is why I went there. I will be competing against top guys every day. The guys I will work with and compete against are top dudes from all over the country. They will push me and elevate my game even more. I will get the work in practice every day to make the games easier and I am so excited about that.”

Heinrich loves the leadership in Athens. It starts with Smart and goes all the way down. The people, the plan and the culture appeal to Heinrich.

“Athens feels like home. There is no place I’d rather be. The relationships are important and I love the connection I have with Coach Hartley. He makes his players feel like humans, not just football players. I love the intensity he has on and off the field and I can’t wait to be a part of what they are doing at Georgia.”
