Miami Hurricanes LB Francisco Mauigoa excited for Texas A&M challenge: Lance Guidry “has a good scheme for us”

The Miami Hurricanes got just what they wanted from Washington State MLB transfer Francisco Mauigoa in Game 1 at UM … he led the team with five tackles, sharing one for a loss, and seemed around the ball almost all the time.

As coach Mario Cristobal said on Monday about Mauigoa, “He’s relentless, fearless, throws his body around. He’s accurate and detailed in his assignments, alignments, tremendous nose for the ball. And he’s a great leader. Good play, bad play, he’s on to the next one. Guys feed off that.”

Now Mauigoa will be in the middle of this Miami defense for a huge matchup against ranked Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon. He knows what the Canes are up against.

“They have a really good offense, a really good quarterback who can throw and can run, too,” Mauigoa said. “They have really big offensive linemen and on the film they look good. We just have to be well prepared. Everybody is doing their business and it’ll be good.”

The Aggies won their opener against New Mexico, 52-10, with 5 TD tosses from QB Conner Weigman (3 to Noah Thomas, 2 to Evan Stewart). Weigman also is a threat to run the ball – as Mauigoa pointed out above – and Texas A&M has a trio of backs that also were effective in the game.

“Coach G (Lance Guidry) has a good scheme for us,” Mauigoa said. “All we have to do now is just execute. That’s how we’re taking it day by day.”

There was a heavy rotation at linebacker in the opener, with Mauigoa and Louisville transfer KJ Cloyd starting and Corey Flagg, Wesley Bissainthe and Keontra Smith also getting meaningful action.

“Get fresh people out there so we can run full speed every time,” Mauigoa said. “It’s a good competition.”

A final thought from Mauigoa?

“There is always room for improvement,” he said. “On the film you can see where we had our weaknesses. One of the mistakes was just mental, doing your assignment. One of the plays I missed my gap. Just minor mistakes that everybody should know before entering the game, there wasn’t a lot but have to keep striving to be perfect.”
