Texas moves up in On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings

With the addition of Allen (Texas) four-star EDGE Zina Umeozulu, the Texas Longhorns have moved up two spots to No. 16 in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.

Umeozulu announced his decision to commit to Texas on Wednesday night. If he chooses to sign with the Longhorns this winter, he will join his older brother, left guard Neto Umeozulu, in Austin next year.

Umeozulu is the nation’s No. 249 overall prospect and No. 15 edge rusher in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 44 player in Texas.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian played a significant role in bringing the 6-foot-4, 221-pound defensive lineman on board with the Longhorns.

“I feel like everything that is required from me at Texas I can do and I believe in what Sark has built and his future there,” Umeozulu told On3. “Texas is also the best of both worlds when it comes to academics and football,” he continued. “I feel like I they can make me better as a man on and off the field, and I feel like I have the best relationship with them.”

After a live evaluation of the Umeozulu as a junior during the 2022 season as Denton (Texas) Guyer and Allen (Texas) squared off, here is what On3 National Recruiting Analyst Sam Spiegelman had to say about the newest Texas pledge:

“2024 top-100 EDGE Zina Umeozulu was quietly in the box score, but the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder generated pressure routinely and drew the attention of Guyer’s protection up front. He faced one of the nation’s best QB, Jackson Arnold, who fires out the ball quickly and decisively, limiting his impact. Umeozulu is raw with outstanding length and moves well in his frame. He flashed in glimpses off the edge and is intriguing nonetheless.”

Longhorns continue to improve 2024 class

Umeozulu is the 17th prospect to pledge to Texas in the 2024 cycle. He joins a Longhorns class that holds commitments from now 10 blue-chip recruits, including Duncanville (Texas) Five-Star Plus+ edge rusher Colin Simmons.

Alongside Simmons and Umeozulu on Texas’ 2024 defensive line are Orlando (Fla.) Jones three-star defensive lineman D’antre Robinson, Duncanville (Texas) three-star defensive lineman Alex January and Lafayette (La.) Christian Academy three-star defensive lineman Melvin Hills.

Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair three-star quarterback Trey Owens is thus far the only signal-caller pledged to the Longhorns. He is joined by an impressive offensive group that includes three top-200 commits in Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star running back Jerrick Gibson, Daingerfield (Texas) four-star wide receiver Aeryn Hampton and North Richland Hills (Texas) four-star interior offensive lineman Daniel Cruz.
