Nick Saban pleased with development of Alabama wide receivers
Nick Saban has a lot to smile about. Yet, perhaps no unit looked more impressive in Alabama’s 56-7 win over Middle Tennessee State than the wide receivers. After the triumph, Saban discussed his wide receivers’ performances.
“They did a good job of getting open, Saban said. “Look, no disrespect to [Middle Tennessee State]. They play hard. They’ve got a good team. They do a good job of coaching. They present a lot of problems for you. But we’re gonna have to separate against a little different caliber of guy in the future, so that’s gonna be important that we keep working on that and understand that, and I think we’ll be fine.”
With No. 11 Texas looming in Week 2, Saban is correct. Nonetheless, Alabama’s wide receivers put up numbers on Saturday that are stunning no matter who the opponent is. In the win, the Crimson Tide wideouts hauled in 226 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
The group was led by Isaiah Bond, who boasted five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. Jermaine Burton didn’t trail far behind, adding three catches for 62 yards and a TD. In total, Alabama saw eight different players record a reception.
Saban is happy with the unit’s depth.
“I do think the receiver group has improved. I think there’s better depth,” Saban said. “There’s more guys that can make plays. I think there’s more confidence. I’m sort of pleased with the way that group has developed.”
Nick Saban compliments other Alabama units
Alabama’s wide receivers aren’t the only ones who received praise from the 71-year-old head coach. After the game, Saban complimented the man who delivered so many beautiful balls to Alabama’s wideouts: Jalen Milroe.
In the win, Milroe racked up over 230 all-purpose yards while posting five touchdowns. Saban was satisfied with his QB1’s performance.
“It was good,” Saban said. “He’s been playing good. Prepared well for the game and I thought he did a nice job out there. I’m sure he will learn a couple of other things that will help him improve. We all got plays that we can improve on. But I think he did a really good job.
“The guys delivered on what we want to try to do,” Saban said. “We played spotty in a couple of spots. So, we need to clean that up. We’re going to play tougher and tougher competition as we go. Got a couple of guys banged up tonight, so that might be a problem for us. But I really liked the attitude of the team, I liked the energy they played with.”
