Miami continues to impress 4-star S Jireh Edwards: “The best safeties come out of Miami”

After a solid freshman campaign, Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy 2026 safety Jireh Edwards became a name to know after being featured on the On3 2026 Football Prospect Watch List, and the Miami Hurricanes are one of the programs that have caught the Baltimore native’s attention early on.
“They’re a family, and they’re very family-oriented,” Edwards told CaneSport. “That’s one of the things I love about Miami. Also, the best safeties come out of Miami. Guys like Ed Reed and Sean Taylor.”
The 6-foot-1, 194-pound defensive back has begun to grow his relationship with the program since receiving an offer from the Hurricanes in May. Miami defensive coordinator Lance Guidry extended the offer via St. Frances head coach Messay Hailemariam after being impressed by his size for a high school freshman, athleticism, and playmaking ability.
“I was truly blessed to get that offer from Miami,” Edwards said. “I grew up playing with them in the NCAA Football video games, so that was pretty cool.”
Thus far Edwards, who is ranked as the No. 61 overall prospect in the 2026 class according to On3’s top football recruits, has received two dozen offers to programs including Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, and USC, among others.
“My recruiting process has been good, and I have just been blessed lately,” Edwards said. “I’m just trying to go to a family environment and somewhere I would want to live.”
Moving forward, Edwards hopes to visit the program in Coral Gables for the first time as he aims to strengthen his bond with the Hurricanes and learn more about the program.
“I want them to understand where I come from,” Edwards said when asked what Miami would have to do to establish itself as one of his top schools early on. “I haven’t visited Miami yet, but I do plan on getting down there after the season.”
CaneSport’s take
During St. Frances Academy’s matchup against Chaminade-Madonna during the Broward County Showcase, Edwards was one of the top performers on either side of the ball despite playing with a broken wrist. Against one of the most potents high school offenses in the country that feature the likes of five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, four-star wide receivers Joshisa Trader and four-star running back Davion Gause, Edwards held his own against the two-time defending state champions and showed why programs such as Miami are so high on him early on.
