Miami offers 2025 CB Xavier Thompson: ‘I was excited’

Miami’s decision to offer Pensacola (Fla.) Pine Forest 2025 cornerback Xavier Thompson didn’t come as a shock to the 6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect, but it was still welcome.

The Hurricanes became the second Power Five program to offer Thompson, joining Kentucky, who has made a steady and consistent push. Thompson said the Hurricanes were initially uncertain if they wanted to extend the offer this early or wait several games into the season to further evaluate his play, but after a discussion with his high school coach, Miami’s staff decided to pull the trigger.

Miami secondary coach Jahmile Addae extended the offer and has been Thompson’s primary point of contact thus far.

“I was excited,” Thompson said. “They said they watched my film and they loved what I did on my film overall. I kind of saw (the offer) coming, because way before that, one of the coaches wanted me to come down to Miami for a (prospect) camp, but I couldn’t because my hamstring was messed up at the time.”

Thompson has received nearly a dozen offers from mostly schools in non-Power conferences, but Miami immediately caught his attention. He is yet to take a formal unofficial visit to Coral Gables but has seen Miami’s campus before, and Addae told Thompson about the on and off-field opportunities the Hurricanes can offer.

“When I want there, I wasn’t able to see a lot, but because I do track too, he told me that you can do track and football,” Thompson said. “They organize things to a point where you can do (football) and still have time for other stuff. They’ll organize it in a way where you’ll have time to do whatever you’ve got on your schedule and still be able to play sports, so I liked hearing that.”

Kentucky, Troy, Florida Atlantic and Arkansas State have made the most aggressive pushes since the start of August, and while it’s too early for Thompson to name any favorites, he’s been appreciative of the attention the schools – including Miami – have shown.

CaneSport’s Take

Thompson is the true definition of an under-the-radar-recruit, but Miami is preparing for the possibility of Thompson having a breakout season and landing attention from some big-name programs by offering him early. Miami’s decision to offer is consistent with its history under this coaching staff to get a foot in the door with recruits early before other major brands roll in.
