FSU releases statement making it clear they voted against ACC expansion

Florida State has found itself right in the middle of all the conversations regarding realignment involving in the ACC. Now, after the conference’s latest moves this morning, the Seminoles wanted to make their stance on the matter crystal clear.

Ralph D. Russo of the AP shared a press release from Florida State’s president and athletic director regarding the league’s additions of Stanford, California, and SMU on Friday. They clarified that their stance was nothing against that trio but that, in the end, their vote in the matter was in fact a no.

“We appreciate the efforts of Commissioner Phillips and our conference partners,” wrote FSU president Richard McCullough. “There are many complicated factors that led us to vote no. That said, we welcome these truly outstanding institutions and look forward to working with them as our new partners in the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

“All three schools are outstanding academic and athletic institutions and our vote against expansion does not reflect their quality,” continued FSU VP and AD Michael Alford. “This is a process that is ongoing and we will continue working with Commissioner Phillips and our conference partners on the success initiatives and revenue-sharing plans.”

In order for this to come about, the ACC needed a dozen votes for yes from their 14 members. They did not have it at one point as Florida State was part of a group with Clemson, NC State, and North Carolina as schools that voted no. However, on Friday morning, they the conference had enough flips to move forward with the admittance.

As part of their addition, the Cardinals and Golden Bears will receive reduced revenue shared. Meanwhile, the Mustangs will receive no revenue over their first seven years of membership.

Again, Florida State has found itself right in the thick of all of this, whether it’s their opinions or their own potential departure. Now, with three new members in the Atlantic Coast Conference as of today, the Seminoles put their stance on record about this decision by the conference.
