NFL announces 20 suspensions beginning following roster cuts

A spate of NFL players are officially beginning suspensions for various transgressions with the roster cut deadline passed and Week 1 on the clock. All told, 20 players will be suspended when the league starts play for the 2023 season on Thursday, Sept. 7.

The list, posted by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, includes a bevy of players that were already known to be suspended. A number of players on the list are suspended for gambling, such as Detroit Lions second-year wideout Jameson Williams.

Others, like running back Alvin Kamara, were not caught up in the spate of gambling suspensions that hit the league this offseason.

The suspensions range from one game to the full 17-game slate. Some are suspended only for games while others are out for “weeks,” meaning they can’t participate in practice.

One NFL player might be added to the suspended ranks soon

Titans running back and former Michigan standout Hassan Haskins has been placed on the Commissioner Exempt List following his summer arrest. The news comes after the ball carrier was placed on the injured reserve, likely ending his 2023 season.

Haskins was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He finished his rookie season in Tennessee with 93 rushing and 57 receiving yards.

Haskins was arrested and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation following two separate incidents with his girlfriend, per MLive.com.

The story from MLive.com reads, “In the first incident, according to ESPN, Haskins is alleged to have strangled his 22-year-old girlfriend, Makiah Green. A second incident saw Green allegedly throw a glass at Haskins, rip a chain off his neck, broke his phone and assault him.

“Green, the girlfriend, was also jailed and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and felony vandalism.”

The roster move comes after the Titans concluded their preseason schedule. Tennessee ended that portion of the year with a 2-1 record. It will open the regular season against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
