With teammates Joshisa Trader, Zaquan Patterson committed to Miami, No. 1 overall prospect Jeremiah Smith expects intense recruiting effort

Miami’s recruiting efforts for Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 class, have been well-documented as the Hurricanes have attempted to flip the 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver away from Ohio State. But he’s about to start receiving a different recruiting effort since two of his teammates and close friends committed to the Hurricanes.

Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star receiver Joshisa Trader and four-star safety Zaquan Patterson, both of whom are now committed to the Hurricanes following Patterson’s announcement at halftime of his game Saturday afternoon, plan to attempt to recruit the country’s top prospect, and their close friend and teammate, to the Hurricanes. Smith is prepared for the effort.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” Smith said. “I already know (the two will attempt to recruit me to Miami).”

Trader told CaneSport earlier last week he was trying to bring Smith to Miami and that he could be called “the best recruiter” if he flips the country’s top recruit away from Ohio State, and Patterson is ready to make a recruiting effort as well.

“There’s no doubt, we’ve got to get him over here” Patterson said. “Jeremiah’s locked in with Ohio State. If we get him to come over (to Miami), it’s over with. We’re going to have to do real work, magic, voodoo, something.”

Smith was happy for both teammates committing to the Hurricanes and believes Coral Gables is the right place for Patterson and Trader, and he told CaneSport last week he hopes to attend Miami’s Sept. 9 game against Texas A&M and the Hurricanes’ Oct. 21 game against Clemson.

His relationship with Miami’s staff, as well as the Hurricanes being the hometown school, has kept the Canes in the mix, although he has repeatedly said he remains committed to Ohio State.

CaneSport’s Take

Smith has long been intrigued by the idea of playing with his high school teammates at the college level, but it’s never been the primary factor in his decision. We expect Miami to stay on his radar until signing day, and while the concept of playing alongside Trader and Patterson at the college level is intriguing, it appears the duo alone has an uphill battle to get him to Coral Gables, regardless of how intensely they recruit Smith. If Miami wants to land the No. 1 prospect, it needs to take serious steps forward this fall. Smith needs to see the Hurricanes win and the offense show dynamic potential and explosiveness this fall to keep Miami in the conversation. Otherwise, their chances of flipping him may go out the door.
