Five things: Takeaways from the released Kansas State depth chart
.) I wanted to cover the surprises of the first Kansas State depth chart of the season first. And though I will cover it later as another item, some of it was the true freshmen that were listed. However, others included Ben Sinnott still being identified as a fullback by the team. Maybe it is their way to ensure that he is on the All-Big 12 first team at the end of the season, though he may not need any help. It did allow K-State to insert more tight ends into the two-deep, though. I also thought that they might make one of the defensive spots still undetermined between Brendan Mott and Nate Matlack. That was not the case. Mott is still the starter. Will Lee, not Keenan Garber, was also anointed a starter.
.) Some may be wondering why John Pastore wasn’t listed as the back-up left tackle. Andrew Leingang is the listed Kansas State reserve at both left guard and left tackle. That is because Pastore missed a large chunk of training camp and is likely not yet available. That is something we’ll continue to track. Other injured players that did not make it on the first K-State depth chart were Christian Duffie and Uso Seumalo.
.) Offensively, some of the observations were notable. Avery Johnson was listed at quarterback along the two-line with Jake Rubley. Kansas State also opted to place both Treshaun Ward and DJ Giddens both at the top, with Anthony Frias as the reserve. The offensive line was as expected, but the Wildcats elected a second unit of receivers comprised of Xavier Loyd and Jadon Jackson, with the final spot being labeled as Shane Porter or true freshman Jayce Brown.
.) I got the second unit of secondary terribly wrong. Jordan Wright and Colby McCalister do compose it, but both are listed as free safeties. Matthew Maschmeier is included but as a strong safety. The back-up jack safeties for K-State are Trey Krause and Jack Fabris. As expected, Jake Clifton and Tobi Osunsanmi are two of the reserve linebackers, with the third being Asa Newsom or Beau Palmer. Cody Stufflebean was the other defensive end included, and the only nose guards were Jevon Banks and Damian Ilalio.
.) Most of it has already been shared but five Kansas State true freshmen made the initial two-deep. The group consisted of quarterback Avery Johnson, receiver Jayce Brown, linebackers Asa Newsom and Austin Romaine and safety Jack Fabris.
