2-Minute Drill: Josh Heupel opens game week with Monday presser

Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel and select defensive players kicked off game week with a Monday press conference in the North Studio off Johnny Majors Street. The Vols and Virginia Cavaliers will kick off Saturday at noon eastern time from Nashville’s Nissan Stadium.

Heupel, along with the rest of his squad, is ready to go and start playing football games. The coach believes last week’s Tennessee mock game week also served an important purpose and the team handled the change in schedule the correct way.

“I feel like our guys were dialed in, did the things that we were asking to. We moved ahead with a little bit of preparation for this coming Saturday. But we still did a lot of really good, all-gear work throughout the course of it too,” the Tennessee head coach said. “And every player inside of your program has got to continue to grow. Good teams do that throughout the course of the season. So for us that week before the week is as important as any other week.

“It’s awesome that we get an opportunity to start in the mid-state, a huge fan following there. But you look at the opportunity we have, we got a great opponent, where SEC Nation is going to be there, national TV audience as we kick off the ’23 season. So, looking forward to being there, having an opportunity to recruit on Friday night as well. And continue to showcase ourselves in front of the entire country, but have our followers, they have an opportunity to host us there. So, looking forward to that and kickoff. Time to go. I’m here. I’m going to say a bunch of words, but it’s time to go play.” 

Tennessee will practice Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and will have its ‘walk-thru’ on Thursday, which is an accelerated session. Players and assistant coaches will speak to the media on Tuesday and Josh Heupel will speak again Thursday prior to kickoff.
