Ole Miss quarterback commit Trever Jackson is a ‘toosly’ prospect with a ton of intrigue

Ole Miss quarterback commit Trever Jackson is a ‘toosly’ prospect with a ton of intrigue

Four-star Jones (Fla.) quarterback Trever Jackson committed to Ole Miss on xxx. And despite an absolutely loaded room in Oxford, Miss., the 6-foot-3, 190 pound prospect might be in the upper echelon in the group when it comes to raw talent.

On3’s director of scouting and rankings Charles Power had an opportunity to see Jackson at length during the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles this summer. The national analyst came away more than impressed with Jackson.

“When it comes to pure velocity, Trever Jackson was the clear standout of the group. The uncommitted prospect has a big-time arm. Jackson absolutely ripped some throws over the course of the event. When he really uncorked throws, it looked like smoke was coming off the football.

“The data backed up the eye test, as Jackson registered the highest score on the Elite 11’s BreakAway Ball Score test – by a fair margin. A one-year varsity starter who is young for the class, Jackson has intriguing upside and ability but will need to continue developing as a player.”

Trever Jackson has only been a high school starter for one year. But his skill set jumps off the tape when you turn it on.

On3’s scouting and rankings assistant Cody Bellaire had nothing but good things to say about the latest Ole Miss commit at Elite 11 Finals.

“He had one of the livest arms at the event. The football detonates out of his hand,” Bellaire said. “His ability to generate power with such little use of his lower half is extremely impressive in this setting. From a mechanical standpoint, he has room to improve. The footwork is unrefined and he struggles at times to tie his lower half to his upper body. But from a true arm talent perspective, Jackson could have the most raw talent of any player in Redondo Beach.

He steadily progressed throughout the workout and ended Day 1 on the ultimate high as the winner of the rail shot challenge, making high level throws on demand,” Bellaire said. “Jackson showed he has all the physical ability to stand out at an event among the nation’s best. As a one-year starter with a later birthday, there’s considerable developmental upside with the On300 prospect.”

Cooper Petagna, a former player personnel analyst at various Power 5 stops and a national recruiting analyst with CBS Sports, absolutely loved what he saw from Jackson at the Elite 11 Finals.

“Second-youngest player in the 20-player field,” Petagna said. “Super live arm. Elite 11 put out some statistics on who had the highest RPM and that was Trever Jackson.

“The guy can sling it, there’s a lot to work with. I think he’s just scratching the surface of what he’s going to be,” Petagna said. “If you’re a college team and you’re still looking for a quarterback, you’re picking up the phone and calling him first.”

Ole Miss is seemingly back on schedule at the quarterback position, per the recruiting calendar.

Jackson seemingly joins LSU transfer Walker Howard and four-star signee Austin Simmons. There’s also a possibility Ole Miss could welcome back a third-year starter in Jaxson Dart. If you’re an Ole Miss fan, though, you hope this is not the case. You’d selfishly like for Dart to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft after a much-improved second year in Lane Kiffin’s system.

If this is the case, Howard and Simmons would be battling it out in 2024 for the No. 1 spot with Jackson taking third string reps and learning the playbook, inside and out. This is not the worst case at all. The latest Ole Miss commit could use a year to get acclimated to the speed of the game and be able to run plays on command.

As a junior and first-year starter at West Orange High School, the 6-foot-3, 190 pound Jackson threw for 1,559 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also managed to run for 306 yards and six touchdowns as well.
