THREE THINGS WE LEARNED ABOUT KANSAS STATE
2. PRACTICING: We also were able to take in the first few periods of Kansas State spring practice on Tuesday morning. Through that, we learned that K-State players Taylor Poitier, DJ Giddens and Ben Sinnott are already back on the practice field with zero restrictions. That is impressive recovery and rehabilitation, particularly in respect to Poitier.
3. GENE TAYLOR: Deservedly so, Gene Taylor was named the FBS Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics. He hired Chris Klieman who won a Big 12 championship on the gridiron for Kansas State this season. That was followed by recent hire Jerome Tang finishing third in the Big 12 and reaching the Elite Eight.
TWO QUESTIONS
1. PRO DAY: The K-State Pro Day is set for Friday and many NFL personnel are expected. Some of that is likely because Deuce Vaughn didn’t do everything at the NFL combine in Indianapolis and defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah and receiver Malik Knowles didn’t really do anything. To see them work out, it will require one to be in Manhattan on March 31. Just which NFL figures will be in attendance and how will that trio perform? I’d imagine Julius Brents does very little after wowing everyone a few weeks ago.
2. ANY EXTRA DEPARTURES: With basketball season finished, the logical next question is who else leaves aside from the outgoing seniors. Kansas State knows that Markquis Nowell, Keyontae Johnson, Tykei Greene, Baybe Iyiola and Desi Sills are moving on, but there is some question about what Ish Massoud will do after choosing to side-step that question immediately after the loss to Florida Atlantic. There are no rumblings of anyone else departing, for what it is worth.
ONE K-STATE PREDICTION
1. SLOW BURN: If Ish Massoud does return to K-State, which is available to him, and no other departures occur, that would mean that the Wildcats only have two more spots to fill. They have already secured the services of high school prospects RJ Jones, Dai Dai Ames and Macaleab Rich. I’d imagine that the transfer portal period is a bit of a slow burn. They will have to be selective, and the Kansas State coaches will have their ears to the ground to discover who all might be in the portal and available so they do not lose their chance at a far better player, too. Patience may be a virtue. Remember, the transfer portal is open for a total of 60 days. It won’t close until May 11.
