‘I’m still being a server’: Why Joe Milton wanted to gift his Tennessee teammates with headphones
Joe Milton III gifted Beats by Dre wireless headphones to his Tennessee football teammates because he wanted nothing more than to do something to help them ahead of the new season. And because he had the opportunity to do so.
“It (was) just a little deal,” Milton told reporters during his press conference on Thursday. “Beats (by Dre) reached out. I did my part of what I needed to do. And then on the backhand of that, they said that they have some Beats for the team and that’s something that I always like doing, helping these guys out any way possible.”
The note inscribed on the box, though, was his idea.
“Everybody around the country that did it has a card,” Milton said, “but the message on that card, yeah, that was from me.”
And it was an important one, too:
Through thick and thin we have each others back, I ride for you because you’re my brothers. We all have one big goal at the end but first let’s win the EAST.

Milton enters the new season — Tennessee kicks off against Virginia in the season-opener on September 2 at Noon Eastern Time (TV: ABC) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville — with another shot as the Vols’ starting quarterback.
He won the open competition for the job two years ago, beating out Hendon Hooker and others in Josh Heupel’s first fall camp as Tennessee’s new head coach, but was lost to an ankle injury in a Week 2 loss to Pittsburgh at Neyland Stadium.
Hooker took over and never looked back.
But Milton got the keys back last November, after Hooker’s season ended with a torn ACL.
Joe Milton last season: 971 yards, 10 touchdowns, 0 interceptions
Milton passed for 971 yards and 10 touchdowns, completing 65 percent of his passes over nine games playing behind Hooker. He started in Tennessee’s 56-0 win in the regular-season finale at Vanderbilt, throwing for 147 yards and a touchdown while the Vols rushed for 362 yards and six touchdowns as a team.
He led Tennessee to a 31-14 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium on December 30. He was named the game’s MVP after throwing for 251 yards and three touchdowns.
Entering the 2023 season, Milton said comfortable as Tennessee’s starting quarterback and is solely focused on getting himself and everyone around him ready.
“I’m still being a server,” Milton said. “I may be the leader on the team, but I’m still being a server every day. I have to get the guys to (understand) the game plan, understand how I see it.
“So I feel comfortable with the game plan, feel comfortable with the playbook, feel comfortable playing right now on this offense. So (I) feel great.”
